Air New Zealand Cancels 1100 Flights: Fuel Costs & Travel Disruption Explained

Air New Zealand Cancels 1100 Flights: Fuel Costs & Travel Disruption Explained

March 11, 2026 James Parker - Business Editor Business

Air Modern Zealand is bracing to cancel roughly 1100 flights through early May, impacting approximately 44,000 passengers, as the airline navigates a surge in jet fuel costs exacerbated by geopolitical instability. The cancellations, announced by Chief Executive Nikhil Ravishankar, will affect both domestic and international routes, though no routes will be eliminated entirely. The airline aims to rebook the majority of affected passengers on alternative flights the same day.

The move comes as global oil prices have spiked due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, specifically related to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil – the largest release in its history – in an attempt to stabilize prices, but the impact remains to be seen. The critical Hormuz Strait, a key oil shipping route, is effectively closed due to the conflict, further constricting supply.

Fuel Costs and the Broader Aviation Landscape

Ravishankar characterized the current fuel price situation as “unprecedented,” but noted that airlines are accustomed to managing fuel price volatility. Yet, the scale and speed of the recent increase are particularly concerning. Air New Zealand has already taken steps to mitigate the impact, including increasing ticket prices by $10 for domestic fares, $20 for short-haul international flights, and $90 for long-haul routes. Qantas and Jetstar have as well recently announced fare increases in response to rising fuel costs.

The cost pressures come at a challenging time for Air New Zealand. The airline reported a half-year loss of $40 million (NZD) in the six months ended December, a significant reversal from the $106 million profit recorded during the same period last year. Nikhil Ravishankar took over as CEO in October 2025, succeeding Greg Foran, and is now facing immediate headwinds.

Strategic Adjustments and Regional Connectivity

While the airline will reduce services “proportionally across the board,” Ravishankar emphasized the importance of maintaining regional connectivity. He has reportedly spoken with regional mayors to address their concerns and secured their support for the adjustments. The focus of the cuts will be on off-peak services, minimizing disruption to essential routes.

Air New Zealand is also considering a small reduction in international services, but Ravishankar indicated that US routes remain crucial, particularly as a gateway for travel to Europe amidst the disruptions in the Middle East. The airline plans to trim only three long-haul flights between now and the end of April. Services to San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and Houston will continue uninterrupted.

Financial Implications and Earnings Guidance

The airline has already suspended its earnings guidance due to the volatility in global jet fuel markets. This move signals a significant level of uncertainty regarding the airline’s future financial performance. The increased ticket prices are intended to offset some of the higher fuel costs, but the extent to which they will be successful remains to be seen.

The current situation highlights the vulnerability of airlines to external shocks, particularly those related to energy prices and geopolitical events. Fuel costs typically represent a substantial portion of an airline’s operating expenses, making them a key driver of profitability. The recent surge in prices is putting significant pressure on margins across the industry.

Leadership Transition and Digital Focus

Nikhil Ravishankar’s appointment as CEO in October 2025 came after a period of significant challenge for Air New Zealand, including navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent supply chain disruptions. Prior to becoming CEO, Ravishankar served as Chief Digital Officer, where he led the airline’s digital transformation efforts. His focus on technology and innovation is expected to play a key role in the airline’s future strategy.

Ravishankar has overseen upgrades to the airline’s technology infrastructure, revamped its customer loyalty program, and strengthened its digital offerings. These initiatives are intended to position Air New Zealand for growth and resilience in a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.

Looking Ahead: Strategic Review and Potential Restructuring

This proves currently too early to determine whether the cost pressures will lead to job cuts, according to Ravishankar. The airline is undertaking a strategic review to assess its options and identify potential areas for cost savings. The outcome of this review will likely have significant implications for the airline’s workforce and future operations.

The next few months will be critical for Air New Zealand as it navigates the challenging environment. The airline’s ability to manage fuel costs, maintain regional connectivity, and adapt to changing market conditions will be key to its long-term success. Investors and passengers will be closely watching the airline’s performance and strategic decisions in the coming weeks, and months.

Air New Zealand’s Group Executive team includes Richard Thomson as Chief Financial Officer, overseeing financial planning and investor relations. Further details on the executive team can be found on the Air New Zealand website.
