Algeria to Launch 2026 Oil & Gas Bid Round: New Opportunities for Investors

Algeria to Launch 2026 Oil & Gas Bid Round: New Opportunities for Investors

March 15, 2026 James Parker - Business Editor Business

Algeria is preparing to launch a new licensing round for oil and gas exploration and development, signaling a renewed push to attract foreign investment into its hydrocarbon sector. The “Algeria Bid Round 2026” was announced Saturday, March 14th, by the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines and will be managed by the national agency, Alnaft.

A New Phase of Opportunity

The upcoming bid round, according to the Ministry, represents “a new era of opportunities” for companies interested in exploring Algeria’s significant energy reserves. Alnaft described the initiative as opening “new perspectives for exploration and development thanks to the most promising opportunities in the world in the hydrocarbon sector, as well as world-class assets.” Further details are expected to be released shortly, but the move builds on a recent process to gauge interest from international oil companies.

This announcement follows a “nomination process” launched by Alnaft in late December 2023, where companies could express interest in specific blocks for exploration. This process involved a portfolio of 24 onshore blocks across Algeria’s key hydrocarbon basins – Illizi, Berkine, Centre, North, and West – with a particular focus on the central region, specifically the Amguid Messaoud and Oued Mya areas. TSA Algeria reports that the nomination process was designed to inform the structure of the upcoming bid round.

Building on Recent Successes

The “Algeria Bid Round 2026” isn’t a completely new initiative. Algeria’s previous licensing round, the Algeria Bid Round 2024, concluded in June 2025 with the awarding of five exploration licenses. These were granted to a mix of international players, including TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy for the Ahara block, a consortium of ENI and PTTEP for Reggane II, ZPEC for Zarafa II, Zangas – Filada for Toual II, and SINOPEC for Qarn El Qessa II. TSA Algeria details the outcomes of the 2024 round.

Alnaft, established in 2005 and attached to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, plays a crucial role in promoting investment in Algeria’s hydrocarbon resources. According to Wikipedia, the agency is also responsible for issuing exploration permits.

What’s on Offer: 13 Projects

The upcoming bid round is expected to encompass 13 projects, split between development and exploration. Specifically, 11 projects are focused on exploration, with several containing existing discoveries that require further evaluation. To aid potential bidders, Alnaft has prepared dedicated project datasheets containing key geological, geophysical, and operational information for each block.

The move comes as Algeria seeks to capitalize on its hydrocarbon resources and strengthen its position in the global energy market. The country is actively working to attract foreign expertise and investment to boost production and explore new opportunities. The Ministry stated that Algeria “is moving forward to exploit new opportunities, strengthen strategic partnerships and shape the future of the hydrocarbon sector.”

Implications for Investors and the Algerian Economy

The launch of the Algeria Bid Round 2026 is likely to be welcomed by international oil and gas companies seeking to expand their portfolios. Algeria possesses substantial proven reserves of both oil and natural gas, and the new licensing round offers access to potentially lucrative exploration and development opportunities. However, potential investors will need to carefully assess the political and regulatory risks associated with operating in Algeria.

For Algeria, a successful bid round could translate into increased investment, job creation, and higher revenues from hydrocarbon exports. The energy sector is a critical component of the Algerian economy, and increased production could help to bolster government finances and support economic growth. The Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines presented the 2026 sectoral budget to the National People’s Assembly on October 26, 2025, according to the Ministry’s website.

ALNAFT’s Evolving Role

Alnaft’s role has evolved over time. In December 2016, following OPEC’s decision to reduce global oil production, the agency was tasked with managing Algeria’s production cuts. More recently, Alnaft has been focused on modernizing its workflows and leveraging data analytics and artificial intelligence to improve performance, as highlighted on the agency’s official website. The agency also hosted technical workshops with the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) in Algiers from May 11-13, 2026, focusing on unlocking hydrocarbon potential.

The agency is also prioritizing collaboration, building partnerships with public institutions, Sonatrach, international partners, local content providers, and research centers to share expertise and create value-added solutions.

Next Steps: Bid Round Details and Timelines

The immediate next step is the release of detailed information regarding the Algeria Bid Round 2026, including the specific terms and conditions, data packages available to bidders, and the timeline for submissions. Companies interested in participating will need to closely monitor Alnaft’s website and announcements for updates. The process will likely involve a pre-qualification phase, followed by a formal bidding process, and ultimately the awarding of licenses to successful bidders. The success of the round will depend on Algeria’s ability to offer attractive terms and a stable regulatory environment to entice international investment.
