Cupra Born Facelift: Android Auto, Shark Nose & New Battery Options
Cupra, the performance-focused sub-brand of Volkswagen, is rolling out a mid-life refresh for its Born electric hatchback. The update, already visible in new images, brings a more aggressive exterior design – dubbed the “shark nose” by some observers – and, for the first time in a Cupra vehicle, a fully Android-based infotainment system. The changes extend to revised battery options and a focus on sustainable materials within the cabin.
The exterior updates are immediately noticeable. Cupra has adopted a new front fascia, characterized by a more pronounced grille and triangular air intakes. New headlights with a distinctive triangular graphic are standard, with optional Matrix LED technology available. At the rear, the Cupra badge is now integrated into an illuminated LED strip that spans the width of the vehicle, connecting the taillights. A more prominent rear diffuser and new wheel designs – 19 and 20-inch options – complete the exterior overhaul. A new color, Timanfaya Grey, joins the available palette.
However, the most significant change is under the hood – or rather, within the dashboard. Cupra has transitioned to an Android Automotive OS-powered infotainment system, a move mirroring a broader trend within the Volkswagen Group. Motor1 reports that the system features a 12.9-inch touchscreen paired with a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a substantial upgrade from the previous generation’s setup. This larger display aims to create a more balanced and modern cabin experience.
Range and Powertrain Adjustments
The powertrain options have been adjusted, particularly for the base model. Cupra now offers a version with a 58 kWh (net capacity) LFP battery paired with a 140 kW electric motor. Above this sits the Endurance model, equipped with a 79 kWh battery and a 170 kW motor. The performance-oriented VZ variant, available with all-wheel drive, retains the 79 kWh battery but boosts power to 240 kW. Both the Endurance and VZ models are targeting a WLTP-certified range of approximately 600 km (373 miles). The base model’s range has too seen an increase, now reaching 450 km (280 miles) on a single charge, up from 427 km (265 miles) previously.
Interior Focus on Sustainability and Usability
Inside, Cupra emphasizes improved perceived quality with new door panels. More importantly, the refresh addresses a key criticism of previous Volkswagen Group EVs: the lack of physical controls. The Born now features traditional buttons on the steering wheel, replacing the often-frustrating haptic controls. InsideEVs highlights this as a significant improvement, enhancing both safety and ease of operation. Cupra has added two additional window switches, responding to complaints about the limited functionality of earlier models. The company is also incorporating more sustainable materials, including SEAQUAL Yarn – a fabric made from recycled plastics recovered from the ocean – throughout the cabin.
The Broader Volkswagen Group Strategy
The Cupra Born’s facelift is part of a wider strategy within the Volkswagen Group to address shortcomings in its electric vehicle offerings. The ID.3, the Born’s mechanical sibling, is also receiving a similar update, indicating a coordinated effort to improve the user experience and competitiveness of the group’s EVs. The move towards Android Automotive OS is particularly noteworthy, as it provides a more flexible and customizable platform compared to the Group’s previous proprietary systems. This shift also aligns with Google’s push to expand its automotive presence, offering a more integrated and feature-rich in-car experience.
Impact on the Competitive Landscape
The updated Cupra Born enters a crowded electric hatchback segment, competing with rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.3, Nissan Leaf, and Hyundai Kona Electric. The Born differentiates itself through its sporty styling, performance-oriented VZ variant, and now, its enhanced infotainment system. The increased range and improved usability – thanks to the return of physical controls – further strengthen its position in the market. However, the continued presence of touch-sensitive climate controls, as noted by YouTube reviews of the facelifted model, remains a potential drawback for some consumers.
What’s Next for Cupra and the Born
The refreshed Cupra Born is expected to begin arriving in European markets in the coming months. Cupra has not yet announced pricing details, but it’s likely to be positioned competitively within the electric hatchback segment. The company will be closely monitoring customer feedback on the new Android-based infotainment system and the usability improvements. Further expansion of the Born lineup, potentially including additional powertrain options or trim levels, is also possible. The success of the facelifted Born will be a key indicator of Cupra’s ability to establish itself as a leading player in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market. The brand’s continued focus on design, performance, and now, user experience, will be crucial in attracting and retaining customers.
