Modern Polish Cottage: A Stunning Renovation of a Traditional Home

Modern Polish Cottage: A Stunning Renovation of a Traditional Home

From PRL Relic to Global Icon: The Reinvention of the Polish “Kostka” Home

The story of Małopolska Chata Podcieniowa, designed by BXB Studio near Krakow, is a testament to architectural vision and a willingness to challenge convention. Initially conceived as a renovation of a traditional Polish “podcieniowa” (gallery) house, the project nearly stalled before it began. It was the architect’s instinct – a belief in the potential of a modern interpretation of a historic form – that ultimately prevailed, resulting in a home that has garnered international acclaim, including being named the “most beautiful house in the world” at the 2021 Architecture & Design Awards. This transformation highlights a broader trend: the revitalization of Poland’s ubiquitous “kostka” (cube) homes, remnants of the country’s post-war construction boom.

These “kostka” homes, characterized by their boxy shapes, flat roofs, and often drab exteriors, were once symbols of modernity and accessibility during the Polish People’s Republic era. Today, they often represent outdated design and impractical layouts. However, architects like Bogusław Barnaś of BXB Studio are proving that these structures possess inherent value as a foundation for architectural recycling and innovative design. The Małopolska Chata Podcieniowa exemplifies this approach, blending traditional Polish architectural elements with contemporary aesthetics.

Lanckorońskie Inspirations and a Departure from the Norm

The “podcieniowa” house, a traditional feature of the Polish countryside, is defined by its covered gallery or porch, providing shelter from the elements and a space for outdoor work. These homes historically organized the landscape, creating welcoming streetscapes, a quality still visible in towns like Lanckoronie, located 40 kilometers from the BXB Studio project. Barnaś drew inspiration from these traditional structures, but faced an initial hurdle: local zoning regulations mandated a two-story design.

Despite this constraint, BXB Studio created a dynamic design. The lower portion of the house, clad in Siberian larch wood, appears to support a dark, triangular prism that forms the roof. “Here, the roof is a form optically detached from the lower level, freely placed on top of it. Although minimalist, this juxtaposition makes it exceptionally dynamic,” Barnaś explained in a 2021 interview. The wood is expected to weather over time, blending the lower and upper sections while maintaining their distinct identities. The house spans 225.3 square meters on the ground floor and 130.1 square meters on the upper level, with interiors arranged across five levels to accommodate the sloping terrain.

A Project Nearly Abandoned, Saved by Architectural Vision

The path to realizing the Małopolska Chata Podcieniowa wasn’t straightforward. The initial concept, “Dom Fotografika” (Photographer’s House), was developed and an agreement signed. However, Barnaś felt it wasn’t the right fit. He then presented the clients with the alternative design – the Małopolska Chata Podcieniowa – which they embraced without hesitation. The documentation for the original project was discarded, and work began anew. This willingness to abandon a previous design and pursue a bolder vision underscores the collaborative relationship between the architect and the clients.

Modern Interiors Complement Traditional Forms

The interior design, handled by Grycaj Design, complements the exterior’s blend of tradition and modernity. The ground floor features an open-plan layout encompassing the kitchen, dining area, living room, gym, bathroom, laundry room, garage, and boiler room. The upper floor houses five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a walk-in closet. The interior incorporates loft-style elements, with exposed concrete ceilings balanced by natural materials and a central fireplace. The clients expressed a preference for a bright, minimalist aesthetic, incorporating elements like old brick and steel to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. “We feel more comfortable in loft-industrial-pub-like atmospheres,” the clients told Murator in 2021.

The Rise of “Ruiners” and Architectural Heritage

The success of the Małopolska Chata Podcieniowa coincides with a growing appreciation for Poland’s architectural heritage, particularly the traditional “podcieniowa” houses. A movement of “ruiners” – individuals dedicated to restoring and preserving these historic structures – is gaining momentum, receiving recognition from organizations like the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. This renewed interest highlights the cultural significance of these buildings and the importance of preserving them for future generations. These efforts are being recognized with awards and support, demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding Poland’s architectural legacy.

Beyond the Award: A Broader Trend in “Kostka” Transformations

The Małopolska Chata Podcieniowa isn’t an isolated case. Across Poland, architects are transforming “kostka” homes into modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing residences. As Murator reports, these renovations are becoming increasingly popular, driven by affordability and the desire for unique living spaces. The BXB Studio project serves as a powerful example of how thoughtful design can breathe new life into these often-overlooked structures, transforming them from symbols of the past into icons of contemporary Polish architecture.
