Nestlé’s M D’Onofrio Acquisition: A Peruvian Ice Cream Legacy

Nestlé’s $80M D’Onofrio Acquisition: A Peruvian Ice Cream Legacy

February 28, 2026 James Parker - Business Editor Business

Nestlé’s recent decision to fully exit the global ice cream business, including the potential sale of brands like Häagen-Dazs and Drumstick to Froneri, has resurfaced scrutiny of its long-held assets – and a significant deal from nearly three decades ago. In 1997, the Swiss food and beverage giant made a strategic, and ultimately costly, investment in the Peruvian market, acquiring the iconic D’Onofrio ice cream brand for US$80 million. This acquisition, representing a substantial sum at the time, not only cemented Nestlé’s position in the Peruvian ice cream sector but likewise provided a platform for expansion into related confectionery markets.

D’Onofrio wasn’t simply a local favorite; prior to Nestlé’s arrival, it controlled over 70% of the ice cream market in Lima, Peru’s capital city. The brand was owned by the Rodríguez Banda family, through Grupo Gloria, and boasted a robust product portfolio and well-established distribution network. Competing multinational corporations, including Unilever, Nabisco, and Philip Morris, had all expressed interest in acquiring D’Onofrio, recognizing its strategic value within the Peruvian consumer landscape. Nestlé, although, opted for a direct purchase, issuing what was described as an ultimatum to the Rodríguez Banda family just before the peak summer season in 1997.

A Legacy of Peruvian Ice Cream

The origins of D’Onofrio date back to 1897, when Italian immigrant Pedro D’Onofrio arrived in Lima with a simple wooden cart and his signature Imperial ice cream. Through ingenuity and perseverance, he expanded the business, establishing an artificial ice plant and multiplying his distinctive yellow carts throughout the city. D’Onofrio quickly became a beloved symbol of Lima, synonymous with quality and tradition. The brand’s Facebook page remains active, showcasing its continued presence in the Peruvian market.

Over the decades, D’Onofrio diversified its offerings, launching a chocolate factory in 1924 and the Sublime ice cream line in 1926. These strategic moves helped mitigate the seasonal fluctuations in sales and strengthened the brand’s resilience against economic shifts and emerging competitors. By the mid-1990s, D’Onofrio had become a highly sought-after asset, attracting attention from global players eager to gain a foothold in the Peruvian market.

Nestlé’s rationale for the direct acquisition stemmed from its belief in the unique value of the Peruvian brand and its local production facility. The company envisioned the plant as a potential innovation hub and a development center for products tailored to the broader Latin American region. The US$80 million price tag reflected this strategic assessment, with D’Onofrio’s ice cream division alone generating US$35 million in annual revenue, supported by a strong distribution network and a loyal customer base.

The Financial Impact and Market Dominance

The acquisition of D’Onofrio immediately positioned Nestlé as a leader in the Peruvian ice cream market. Beyond ice cream, the deal bolstered Nestlé’s presence in the panettone (a traditional Italian sweet bread popular in Peru) and chocolate sectors. Following the acquisition, D’Onofrio served as a platform for innovation and expansion, allowing Nestlé to strengthen its product portfolio and consolidate its market leadership. Peru Retail reports that D’Onofrio has historically dominated approximately 80% of the Peruvian ice cream market.

Even with the emergence of local competitors like Lamborgini, D’Onofrio, under Nestlé’s ownership, maintained its dominant position. The brand’s strong reputation, coupled with Nestlé’s extensive distribution network and continued investment in product development, proved demanding to overcome. The iconic yellow carts remained a ubiquitous sight in Lima and other Peruvian cities, reinforcing D’Onofrio’s brand recognition and customer loyalty.

Nestlé leveraged its Lima-based plant to develop new products, many of which were subsequently launched in other markets. The company viewed D’Onofrio not only as a successful Peruvian brand but also as a valuable source of innovation within its broader international strategy for ice cream and confectionery products.

What’s Next for D’Onofrio?

The current situation, with Nestlé seeking to divest its global ice cream business, raises questions about the future of D’Onofrio in Peru. Nestlé has stated it is “evaluating details” and next steps for its local ice cream operations, promising to communicate further information in due course. The company is reportedly in advanced negotiations to sell its ice cream business to Froneri, a joint venture between Nestlé and PAI Partners. Nestlé’s sale of its global ice cream business, as reported by Google News, signals a broader strategic shift towards focusing on food and snacks.

The outcome of these negotiations will determine whether D’Onofrio remains under Nestlé’s umbrella or transitions to new ownership. Given its enduring brand recognition and market leadership in Peru, D’Onofrio is likely to remain a valuable asset, regardless of its future owner. The brand’s story serves as a compelling example of how a strategic acquisition can transform a market and create a lasting legacy, even as the parent company reevaluates its global portfolio.
