New BMW i3 Electric Sedan Boasts 900km Range & Neue Klasse Tech

New BMW i3 Electric Sedan Boasts 900km Range & Neue Klasse Tech

March 19, 2026 James Parker - Business Editor Business

Munich-based automaker BMW has officially launched the i3, a novel all-electric sedan representing the company’s next-generation “Neue Klasse” platform. The vehicle, effectively the electric evolution of the iconic 3 Series, boasts a projected range of 900 kilometers (approximately 560 miles) under the WLTP testing cycle, positioning it as a potential leader in electric vehicle range. The launch follows the introduction of the iX3 SUV six months prior, marking a significant step in BMW’s electrification strategy.

The i3 shares its technical underpinnings with the iX3, but engineers have demonstrably increased range. Whereas the iX3 achieved a maximum certified range of 805 km (roughly 500 miles) in WLTP testing, BMW demonstrated the platform’s potential by completing a real-world drive exceeding 1,000 km on a single charge with the iX3. As reported by PiataAuto.md last November, this test highlighted the capabilities of the Neue Klasse architecture.

The new i3’s 900 km range surpasses not only Tesla’s current offerings but similarly many Chinese electric vehicle models, which often utilize the more lenient CLTC testing standard. Even Lucid Air, currently holding the title of longest-range Western EV, achieves a WLTP-certified range of 861 km. This positions BMW’s i3 as a substantial leap forward in electric vehicle range capabilities.

Design Shifts and Interior Familiarity

While previewed through camouflaged prototypes, the final design of the i3 represents a departure from earlier iterations. Notably, the vehicle has moved away from the rectangular headlights seen in previous prototypes, adopting a more streamlined design that echoes the current 3 Series. The front grille presents a more complex aesthetic, with elongated sections that integrate the headlights and feature median LED lines. Proportions have also been adjusted, with the rear axle shifted further back and a shorter hood and front overhang, a change dictated by the absence of large inline-six engines traditionally housed in the 3 Series.

Inside, the i3 largely mirrors the interior of the iX3, featuring a curved display for the infotainment system and a panoramic display beneath the windshield for essential vehicle information. The steering wheel retains the signature BMW vertical spokes, and physical controls are minimized, concentrated on the steering wheel, doors, and center console. The longer wheelbase provides increased rear passenger space, and the absence of a traditional transmission tunnel enhances comfort for the middle passenger, though the floor remains elevated due to the battery pack.

Technical Specifications and Performance

The i3 is built on an 800V architecture, enabling quick charging capabilities of up to 400 kW. This allows for the addition of 400 km of range in approximately 10 minutes. The battery utilizes cylindrical lithium-ion cells, 46mm in diameter and 95mm in height, integrated directly into the battery pack without intermediate modules. The powertrain employs a synchronous electric motor with excitation (EESM) at the rear and an asynchronous motor (ASM) at the front, allowing BMW to avoid the employ of rare earth magnets while maintaining high efficiency. BMW Blog details these specifications, highlighting the engineering choices behind the i3’s performance.

The launch version, the i3 50 xDrive, features dual motors, delivering a combined output of 469 horsepower and 645 Nm (475 lb-ft) of torque. This power output places it near the performance level of BMW’s current 3.0-liter engine offerings and approaches the output of the M3. While BMW has not yet disclosed the i3 50 xDrive’s weight or 0-100 km/h acceleration time, estimates suggest a weight around 2,050-2,085 kg, slightly heavier than its predecessor but lighter than many performance plug-in hybrids.

Production and Market Entry

Production of the BMW i3 is slated to commence in August 2026 at BMW’s main plant in Munich, a shift from the iX3, which is manufactured in Hungary. European deliveries are expected to commence in the fall of 2026. BMW has also confirmed the development of high-performance M Performance and full M versions of both the i3 and the combustion-engine 3 Series, signaling a commitment to offering a diverse range of options within the Neue Klasse lineup.

The i3’s design cues are expected to heavily influence the next-generation 3 Series, with BMW considering the fully electric version as the inaugural member of the new lineup. Spy shots have already revealed striking similarities between the two models, despite their differing platforms. The introduction of the i3 represents a significant investment in BMW’s electric future and a direct challenge to established EV manufacturers like Tesla and Lucid. Europesays.com provides further coverage of the launch, emphasizing the vehicle’s competitive positioning.

BMW has also indicated that the i3 will feature a unique braking system designed for exceptionally smooth deceleration, eliminating the typical sounds and sensations associated with traditional braking systems. Despite a recent ban on retractable door handles in China, the i3 incorporates this design feature, potentially requiring BMW to develop alternative solutions for the Chinese market.

Looking ahead, BMW will likely expand the Neue Klasse platform to include additional models, further solidifying its commitment to electric mobility. The success of the i3 will be crucial in determining the broader adoption of the Neue Klasse architecture and BMW’s overall position in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
