Oil Prices Surge: $110+ Barrel, Middle East Conflict & Gas Markets

March 9, 2026 James Parker - Business Editor Business

Oil prices surged past $110 a barrel on Monday, reaching levels not seen since 2022, as the conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt global supply routes and fuel fears of wider regional instability. Brent crude, the international benchmark, briefly touched $111.69 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the U.S. Standard, climbed above $108. The rapid ascent reflects escalating concerns about potential disruptions to production and shipping, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil flows.

The Strait of Hormuz: A Pressure Point

Approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply – roughly 15 million barrels per day – transits the Strait of Hormuz, according to research firm Rystad Energy. Recent reports indicate that concerns over Iranian missile and drone strikes have already stalled tanker traffic, creating a bottleneck that is driving up prices. Iran has explicitly threatened to attack oil tankers passing through the strait, further exacerbating the situation. The potential for a complete blockage, even temporary, is a significant driver of current market anxiety.

A Cascade of Price Increases

The price increases have been dramatic. CNN reports that oil futures and gasoline prices have skyrocketed as traders anticipate prolonged restrictions on oil flow. US oil futures rose 18% to around $108 a barrel, the highest level since July 19, 2022. Brent futures increased 16%, nearing $108 a barrel. Prior to this latest surge, Brent had already climbed 28% and WTI had risen 36% the previous week. The speed and magnitude of these increases are reminiscent of the price shocks experienced following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Impact on Gasoline Prices and the US Economy

The immediate impact is being felt at the pump. While a precise national average is still developing, early indicators suggest a substantial increase in gasoline prices. The Associated Press notes that consumers and businesses are already facing higher costs for gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. This increase in energy costs adds to existing inflationary pressures within the US economy, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve’s efforts to manage inflation and interest rates. The potential for a prolonged spike in fuel prices raises concerns about a broader economic slowdown.

Kuwait and UAE Production Cuts

The disruption isn’t limited to shipping. Several major oil producers in the region are taking precautionary measures. Kuwait announced on Saturday it would reduce its oil production, citing the war as the reason. This move, along with similar considerations from the United Arab Emirates, signals a broader concern about the stability of regional production capacity. These cuts, even if temporary, will further tighten global supply and contribute to upward price pressure.

The US Response and Trump’s Perspective

The Biden administration is reportedly taking steps to restock US munitions, signaling a commitment to supporting Israel and maintaining regional stability. However, the situation remains highly volatile. Former President Donald Trump weighed in on the situation via his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that the surge in oil costs is a “very small price to pay” for US and global safety, and peace. Trump’s statement highlights the political complexities surrounding the issue, as policymakers balance economic concerns with geopolitical priorities.

Dollar Strength and Market Volatility

The escalating conflict is also impacting currency markets. Reuters reports that the US dollar is surging as investors seek safe-haven assets amid the uncertainty. This dollar strength can further exacerbate inflationary pressures in countries that rely on dollar-denominated oil imports. Stock markets are also reacting negatively, with Dow futures dropping more than 800 points, and S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures falling as traders fear the impact of higher fuel prices on corporate earnings and economic growth.

Potential for $150 Oil

Analysts are increasingly warning of the potential for even higher prices. Homayoun Falakshahi, lead crude research analyst at Kpler, suggests that oil could rise to $150 a barrel by the end of March if transit through the Strait of Hormuz doesn’t resume normal operations. This scenario would have significant implications for global economic growth and could trigger a recent wave of inflationary pressures.

Looking Ahead: Key Factors to Watch

The trajectory of oil prices will depend on several key factors in the coming weeks. The most critical is the resolution – or escalation – of the conflict in the Middle East. Any further disruptions to oil production or shipping, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, will likely push prices higher. Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation and restore stability are crucial. The response from OPEC+ (the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies) will be closely watched. The group has the capacity to increase production, but its willingness to do so will depend on geopolitical considerations and its own economic interests. Finally, monitoring the impact of higher oil prices on global economic growth and inflation will be essential for policymakers and investors alike.
