Renault Niagara Pickup: New Production & Export Plans for Córdoba Plant

Renault Niagara Pickup: New Production & Export Plans for Córdoba Plant

March 25, 2026 James Parker - Business Editor Business

The Renault plant in Santa Isabel, Córdoba, Argentina, is poised for a significant industrial shift. Following the cessation of joint production of the Nissan Frontier and Renault Alaskan pickups, alongside the discontinuation of the Logan and Sandero models, the facility is preparing for a new, independently developed project: the compact pickup internally known as Project Niagara. This marks a substantial bet on the future of the plant and Argentina’s role in the regional automotive market.

The move comes after the end of a productive agreement with Nissan – initiated in 2018 with an investment of approximately US$600 million – which freed up capacity at Santa Isabel. That space will now be occupied by Niagara, which will account for two-thirds of the plant’s industrial capacity and operate with two full shifts. Renault Argentina President and CEO Pablo Sibilla recently indicated the company is already testing prototypes of the new pickup around the Santa Isabel facility. Autoblog reports Sibilla himself has been behind the wheel of these early test units.

Export Focus and Regional Ambitions

The scale of the Niagara project is considerable. Industrial projections anticipate up to 160,000 units destined for export, confirming a strong regional orientation. This isn’t simply about serving the domestic market. Renault intends to position Argentina as a key export hub within its global strategy. The company’s “International Game Plan” includes an overall investment of €3.0 billion in eight new models across international markets outside of Europe, with Niagara representing a significant portion of that commitment. Minuto Motor details the announcement of the project and the broader investment strategy.

The Niagara pickup emerges from the company’s concept vehicle and represents Renault’s new approach to the mid-size pickup segment, a market that has gained prominence in Latin America. The shift signifies a move away from collaborative ventures like the Nissan partnership and towards a more independent product strategy for the Argentine plant.

What the Niagara Might Seem Like

While Renault hasn’t released detailed specifications, information from Brazilian automotive media outlet Auto Esporte, suggests potential features of the production version of the Niagara. The reports indicate a top-of-the-line “Outsider” trim level with a more adventurous aesthetic, including side steps, unique door decals, robust bumpers and a roll bar, along with interior enhancements like specialized floor mats and dashboard accents. La Nación reported on these details, noting they remain unconfirmed by Renault.

The “Outsider” version may offer both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, with the 4×4 potentially including a transfer case and rear differential. Mechanically, both configurations are expected to utilize the 1.3 TCe turbo flex engine already found in other regional Renault models, producing around 163 horsepower and 27.5 kgfm of torque, paired with a six-speed dual-clutch EDC automatic transmission. Renault has stated the Niagara will exceed 5 meters in length, with a potential wheelbase of around 2.95 meters, representing the technical limit of the regional modular platform.

The final design is expected to closely resemble the concept presented in 2023, featuring an aggressive front end with the “Renault” lettering prominently displayed on the grille – replacing the traditional diamond logo – and a robust bumper designed to convey solidity. The interior is anticipated to share architecture with the Renault Boreal SUV, including dual 10-inch screens and the openR link multimedia system with Google services integration.

Impact on the Córdoba Region and Beyond

The Niagara project isn’t just significant for Renault; it has broader implications for the Córdoba province and the Argentine economy. The investment reinforces Renault’s commitment to Argentina after nearly 70 years of operation at the Santa Isabel plant. The project’s success is tied to the region’s ability to become a competitive export base, potentially boosting employment and economic activity. The involvement of local unions, like SMATA, and industry clusters, such as the Córdoba Automotive Cluster and the Córdoba Industrial Union, underscores the collaborative nature of the initiative.

The closure of the Nissan-Renault joint venture and the discontinuation of the Logan and Sandero models created uncertainty for workers at the Santa Isabel plant. The Niagara project offers a path forward, but the transition will require adaptation and investment in new skills. The plant is currently undergoing modifications in preparation for Niagara production, with a temporary shutdown scheduled for next week to facilitate these changes.

What’s Next for the Niagara Pickup

Renault is currently in the final stages of preparation for the industrial launch of the Niagara pickup. The temporary production halt next week signals the project is nearing completion. While a firm launch date hasn’t been announced, the company is clearly focused on ramping up production and preparing for export. The success of the Niagara will depend on Renault’s ability to navigate the complexities of the regional automotive market, manage supply chains, and maintain competitive pricing. The company’s long-term strategy hinges on establishing Argentina as a key manufacturing and export hub for its pickup truck lineup.
