Tauranga’s Marra Marine Builds .2M Custom Boat, ‘Kaeā’

Tauranga’s Marra Marine Builds $2.2M Custom Boat, ‘Kaeā’

March 3, 2026 James Parker - Business Editor Business

Tauranga-based boat builder Marra Marine is set to unveil its first custom build, the 13.8-meter Kaeā, at the 2026 Auckland Boat Display, running March 5-8. The vessel, priced at $2.2 million, represents a significant milestone for the relatively new company and a strategic bet on a niche within the competitive New Zealand boatbuilding industry.

A Boutique Approach to a Growing Market

Founded by Tim and Maddie Marra, Marra Marine is positioning itself as a specialist in the 12- to 16-meter boat segment, a size class underserved by the larger yards concentrated in Auckland. “We are in a unique position given that we are quite boutique down here in Tauranga, where we can specialise in that slightly smaller boat,” explained Maddie Marra to the Bay of Plenty Times. This focus allows for a level of customization and attention to detail that may be hard to replicate in higher-volume operations. The Auckland Boat Show, expanded by 20% this year to include 150 exhibitors and 200 boats displayed across 1.3 kilometers of waterfront at Jellicoe Harbour and Wynyard Wharf, provides a high-profile platform for Marra Marine to showcase its capabilities.

The Kaeā, meaning “to wander or roam” in Māori, was commissioned by a client based in Wellington. The build, which took 20 months to complete, was entirely undertaken in Tauranga, underscoring Marra Marine’s commitment to local manufacturing and the growing strength of the region’s marine industry. The company is actively working to raise the profile of Tauranga as a world-class marine construction hub.

Engineering and Design Choices

The Kaeā’s construction utilizes a triple-skin plywood hull, vacuum-packed and reinforced with layers of fiberglass both inside and out. This technique balances strength and weight, crucial considerations for a vessel designed for performance and efficiency. Elite Marine Design, led by Bill Upfold, handled the design work, tailoring the boat to the owner’s specific requirements. The owner prioritized a classic aesthetic combined with modern functionality, requesting a cruising speed of 27 knots, accommodations for two, and expansive living spaces, including an open cockpit optimized for fishing.

Upfold’s design incorporates a “fine entry” to enhance seakeeping in varied conditions and a carefully calibrated hull shape to facilitate efficient planing. He described the collaboration with Marra Marine as a positive experience, emphasizing the shared commitment to realizing the owner’s vision. “The greatest thing with these custom builds is the partnership between the owner, designer and builder, all striving for the same thing, creating and realising the dream.”

Tauranga’s Rising Profile in Marine Construction

Marra Marine’s emergence reflects a broader trend of growth within the Tauranga marine sector. Peter Busfield, executive director of New Zealand Marine, highlighted the region’s “long and proud” history of boatbuilding and its advantageous location, providing easy access to the Mercury Bay Islands and prime fishing grounds. The selection of Marra Marine to build an Elite-designed vessel is particularly noteworthy, as Elite Designs only partners with accredited boat builders, signifying a vote of confidence in the Tauranga yard’s capabilities.

The economic impact of the marine industry extends beyond boatbuilding itself. It supports a network of suppliers, service providers, and related businesses, contributing to local employment and economic diversification. The industry also benefits from New Zealand’s reputation for high-quality craftsmanship and innovative design, attracting international clients and boosting export revenue.

A “Rolls-Royce” of Cruiser Boats and the Investment Behind It

Maddie Marra described the Kaeā as the “Rolls-Royce of cruiser boats,” a descriptor that reflects both the vessel’s premium price tag and the meticulous attention to detail invested in its construction. The $2.2 million cost reflects not only materials and labor but also the bespoke nature of the project and the expertise of the design and build teams. Tim Marra, owner and operator of Marra Marine, expressed a sense of pride in the accomplishment, stating that showcasing the Kaeā at the Auckland Boat Show was a “massive dream” and an opportunity to demonstrate the company’s ability to compete with established players in the industry.

For Tim Marra, with over two decades of experience in the marine industry, this debut represents a culmination of years of dedication. He emphasized the importance of standing on “our own two feet” and producing a product comparable to those he had previously helped build for others. The success of the Kaeā is therefore not merely a commercial objective but also a personal validation of his skills and vision.

Looking Ahead: Traction and Future Builds

Marra Marine is optimistic about the reception the Kaeā will receive at the Auckland Boat Show. Even as acknowledging the presence of similar production boats, the company believes the Kaeā’s unique design and custom build quality will set it apart. Tim Marra expressed a desire to leverage this success into further projects, stating, “I don’t want my last 25 years of blood, sweat, and tears to go to waste.”

The company’s future growth will likely depend on its ability to secure additional commissions and maintain its reputation for quality and innovation. The Auckland Boat Show provides a crucial opportunity to connect with potential clients and demonstrate the value proposition of a boutique, custom boatbuilding experience. The broader health of the New Zealand economy and the global demand for recreational vessels will also play a role in shaping Marra Marine’s trajectory.
