World’s Best Airlines 2026: Qatar Airways Tops AirlineRatings.com List

World’s Best Airlines 2026: Qatar Airways Tops AirlineRatings.com List

March 19, 2026 James Parker - Business Editor Business

Qatar Airways has once again been named the world’s best airline for 2026 by AirlineRatings.com, a leading aviation safety and product rating website. The annual awards, distinct from the site’s safety rankings, focus exclusively on the inflight experience and onboard product, assessed through measurable criteria rather than public opinion. This marks a continued period of recognition for the Doha-based carrier, solidifying its position at the top of the industry as passenger expectations evolve.

A Tight Race at the Top

The rankings, released Thursday, categorize airlines into full-service, low-cost, and hybrid models, reflecting the current industry landscape. AirlineRatings.com also independently assessed and ranked the best Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First Class cabins for the coming year, with detailed findings available on their website. The competition for the top spot was described as “tight” by Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings.com, but Qatar Airways ultimately prevailed due to its consistent onboard offering, generous meal service, extensive entertainment options, and overall value proposition.

Full-Service Standings: A Shifting Landscape

Following Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific secured the second position, although Singapore Airlines landed in third place, according to the AirlineRatings.com assessment. Korean Air and STARLUX Airlines rounded out the top five. Notably, Taipei-based STARLUX Airlines’ rapid ascent is being attributed to its strong cabin service, high-quality catering, and modern interiors, particularly as it prepares for expansion into the European market later in 2026.

The full rankings for full-service airlines are as follows: Qatar Airways (1), Cathay Pacific (2), Singapore Airlines (3), Korean Air (4), STARLUX Airlines (5), Japan Airlines (6), Turkish Airlines (7), Emirates (8), Air New Zealand (9), Etihad Airways (10), EVA Air (11), Qantas (12), Virgin Atlantic (13), Hainan Airlines (14), All Nippon Airways (ANA) (15), Vietnam Airlines (16), jetBlue (17), KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (18), Air France (19), Malaysia Airlines (20), Thai Airways (21), Fiji Airways (22), Saudia Airlines (23), Garuda Indonesia (24), and LOT Polish Airlines (25).

Hybrid Airlines: Lufthansa Leads the Pack

The hybrid airline category, which blends elements of full-service and low-cost carriers, saw Lufthansa accept the top spot. This model is becoming increasingly prevalent as airlines adapt to competitive pressures, offering a mix of complimentary and à la carte services. Lufthansa’s success in this category is attributed to its efficient short-haul routes with buy-on-board options, combined with a full-service experience on medium and long-haul flights, including its highly-regarded Allegris business class seat.

The top five hybrid airlines for 2026 are: Lufthansa (1), WestJet (2), Virgin Australia (3), Delta Air Lines (4), and United Airlines (5). Other airlines recognized in this category include American Airlines, SWISS, Finnair, British Airways, TAP Portugal, Iberia, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Avianca, Air Europa, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Air Transat, Austrian Airlines, Southwest Airlines, ITA Airways.

Low-Cost Carriers: HK Express Takes Flight

In the low-cost carrier segment, HK Express, owned by Cathay Pacific, secured the top position for the first time. The airline’s success is largely attributed to its exceptional cabin crew and a standout onboard menu featuring Hong Kong street food and international favorites. Jetstar and AirAsia followed in second and third place, respectively. Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, ranked fifth, a slight decline from its eighth-place position in 2025, according to Business Times.

The full list of top low-cost carriers includes: HK Express (1), Jetstar (2), AirAsia Group (3), AirBaltic (4), Scoot (5), FlyNAS (6), Breeze (7), easyJet (8), Wizz Air (9), Vietjet Air (10), Ryanair (11), Jet2 (12), TUI Group (13), Cebu Pacific (14), GOL (15), Norwegian (16), Volaris (17), SKY Airline (18), Vueling (19), and Spring Airlines China (20).

Beyond the Rankings: Regional and Cargo Excellence

AirlineRatings.com also recognized excellence in regional and cargo operations. Porter Airlines was awarded the title of World’s Best Regional Airline, praised for its passenger comfort features, including complimentary beer and wine, free Wi-Fi, and a no-middle-seat configuration. Cathay Cargo received the award for World’s Best Branded Cargo Operations, recognizing its strong network, specialized freight solutions, and advanced handling facilities.

Singapore Changi Airport Remains a Global Leader

For a second consecutive year, Singapore Changi Airport was named World’s Best Airport, lauded for its seamless connectivity, efficient processes, and standout features like the Jewel complex. The airport also topped AirlineRatings.com’s Flyers Choice Awards for the past two years, further cementing its reputation as a global benchmark for air travel.

The airline industry continues to adapt to evolving passenger expectations and competitive pressures. These awards highlight the airlines that are prioritizing onboard experience and service quality, signaling a potential shift in focus beyond simply price and route networks.

Looking Ahead

The coming months will be crucial for airlines as they navigate fluctuating fuel prices, ongoing supply chain challenges, and evolving travel demand. The expansion plans of airlines like STARLUX, coupled with the continued dominance of carriers like Qatar Airways, will likely shape the competitive landscape in 2026 and beyond. Further cabin upgrades and service enhancements, as evidenced by Lufthansa’s Allegris seat and HK Express’s culinary offerings, will be key differentiators in attracting and retaining passengers.
