The partnership, announced Thursday, introduces an application allowing for near real-time disbursements from DAFs via the Zelle network, replacing the traditional, often lengthy, paper-based process. This initiative is part of Zelle’s broader “Zelle Forward” agenda, focused on expanding the use cases for its popular peer-to-peer payment platform.

The core of the change lies in speed and efficiency. Currently, charitable grants from DAFs can take weeks to reach nonprofits. The new system, initially being piloted through Bank of America’s Charitable Gift Fund, aims to deliver those funds almost instantly. Bank of America’s Charitable Gift Fund distributed over 100,000 grants totaling $1.3 billion in 2025, according to Stock Titan, highlighting the scale of potential impact from this faster delivery method.

How the New System Works

Donor-advised funds are investment accounts specifically designed for charitable giving. Donors receive an immediate tax deduction when they contribute to the fund, then recommend grants to qualified charities over time. The administrative overhead and processing times associated with these grants have long been a point of friction. Zelle’s network, already handling over $1.2 trillion in annual transactions – and increasingly used for everyday expenses like rent and childcare – offers a digital infrastructure capable of significantly reducing those delays. The initial rollout focuses on a select group of nonprofit organizations, with plans to expand availability to other financial institutions offering Zelle and DAF programs.

Denise Leonhard, general manager of Zelle, emphasized the broader vision, stating, “Through Zelle Forward, we are advancing practical new applications of the Zelle network, and this charitable grant delivery capability represents the first of many ways Zelle will continue to innovate and grow.” This suggests Zelle is actively exploring other applications beyond person-to-person payments, positioning itself as a versatile financial tool. Bank of America’s newsroom details that the speed and security of this delivery could be particularly impactful in urgent situations, such as natural disasters or local crises.

Impact on the Nonprofit Sector

For nonprofits, the implications are substantial. Faster access to funds translates to greater operational flexibility and the ability to respond more quickly to emerging needs. Consumer adoption of instant payouts is also on the rise, with 74% of U.S. Consumers reporting they’ve received an instant payout, according to a recent PYMNTS Intelligence report.

Beyond Bank of America: Broader Adoption

Whereas the initial proof of concept is with Bank of America’s Charitable Gift Fund, the long-term goal is wider adoption across the financial industry. Zelle is actively working with other financial institutions to integrate this capability into their DAF programs. This expansion will be crucial to realizing the full potential of the new system. The success of the pilot program will likely influence the pace of adoption, as will considerations around platform readiness and network requirements.

The Competitive Landscape

Zelle’s move isn’t occurring in a vacuum. Other payment platforms are also vying for a share of the charitable giving market.
