Adelaide Cup 2024: Photos of Fashion & Racing

The March 9 Adelaide Cup at Morphettville delivered a dramatic victory for American Wolf and jockey Jett Stanley, but the celebration took an unexpected turn when Stanley was thrown from the horse immediately after the finish line. The win marks a career high for the 21-year-old Stanley, though his initial confirmation of the victory came while being attended to by paramedics.

In a tightly contested race, American Wolf, trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, edged out Highland Bling, the Phillip Stokes and Lachie Neindorf pairing. The race itself was notable for its dynamic shifts in momentum. According to Racing.com, Berkeley Square experienced a significant stumble at the start, losing eight lengths, while Komaichi initially took a commanding lead, establishing a seven-length advantage mid-race.

Stanley recounted the unusual circumstances surrounding his win. While jogging back towards the mounting yard, he inquired with the paramedics about the photo finish. The ambos asked whether I was okay? I said to them tell me the result of the photo and I’ll tell you. One of the ambos said American Wolf and you’ve won. The limp cleared up quickly, he said, as reported in multiple sources. The initial disbelief quickly turned to elation as the crowd confirmed the result.

The scene was one of both triumph and concern as Stanley was briefly incapacitated. He was quickly remounted by the clerk of the course, allowing him to celebrate with American Wolf. This victory follows Stanley’s recent success in the Launceston Cup, where he rode Asva to victory just twelve days prior. Still, Stanley emphasized that the Adelaide Cup win surpassed even that achievement. He’s a proper stayer. Hopefully One can see him on the first Tuesday in November, Stanley stated, hinting at ambitions for a future Melbourne Cup run.

The past two weeks have been a whirlwind for Stanley, involving approximately 18,000 kilometers of travel between racing events. He rode at Murray Bridge on Saturday, Stony Creek on Sunday, before returning to Adelaide for the Adelaide Cup. This demanding schedule underscores the dedication and commitment required to succeed in the competitive world of horse racing.

Looking ahead, Stanley is already focused on his next challenge. He is scheduled to ride Jenni The Fox for owner Tony Ottobre and trainer Ciaron Maher in the Coolmore Classic in Sydney on Saturday. He views this as another opportunity to prove his capabilities, building on his recent successes. I’ve done a Group 3, now a Group 2 today and hopefully I tick off a Group 1 on Saturday, he said.

Stanley also acknowledged the crucial role of his manager, Brady McArdle, in navigating his increasingly busy schedule and career trajectory. A big thanks to my manager Brady McArdle who is working hard, this is my living, my passion…. he stated. The Adelaide Cup win not only represents a personal milestone for Stanley but also highlights the collaborative nature of success in horse racing, involving trainers, owners, and dedicated support staff.

The Adelaide Cup, a 3200m race held at Morphettville, continues to be a significant event in the Australian racing calendar. American Wolf’s victory adds another chapter to the race’s storied history, and Jett Stanley’s remarkable story – winning a major race and then learning of his triumph while receiving medical attention – is sure to be remembered as one of the most unique in recent memory. The win positions both Stanley and American Wolf as rising stars to watch in the coming seasons.
