Alan Cumming Criticises BBC Over BAFTA Racial Slur & Free Speech Edit

Alan Cumming Criticises BBC Over BAFTA Racial Slur & Free Speech Edit

March 3, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

A Night Overshadowed: Alan Cumming Condemns BBC’s Handling of BAFTAs Incident

Alan Cumming has publicly criticized the BBC’s decision to broadcast a racial slur during the 2026 BAFTA Awards ceremony, stating the broadcaster “let down” viewers. The incident occurred during a presentation by Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, and has sparked widespread debate about editorial choices and the handling of live broadcasts. The controversy unfolded on February 22nd, overshadowing many of the evening’s wins, including the Best Actor upset achieved by Robert Aramayo for his role in I Swear.

The slur was uttered by John Davidson, a campaigner with Tourette’s syndrome and the subject of the biopic I Swear, as Jordan and Lindo were presenting the award for Best Visual Effects. Davidson also vocalized other disruptive phrases during the ceremony, including a direct expletive towards the directors of the Best Children’s and Family Film winner, Boong, and a demand for silence directed at BAFTA chair Sara Putt.

The Editing Choices and the Fallout

The BBC broadcasts the BAFTAs with a two-hour delay, and during this process, a portion of Akinola Davies Jr.’s acceptance speech – specifically, the remark “Free Palestine” – was edited out. However, the broadcaster opted to retain the racial slur in the broadcast, a decision that drew immediate and intense criticism. Cumming, who hosted the awards show, subsequently issued an apology “for all the pain Black people have felt at hearing that word echoed round the world” and expressed regret that the Tourette’s community was “reminded of the lack of understanding and tolerance that abounds regarding their condition.”

Cumming’s statement, shared on social media over a week after the event, continued, “We were all let down by decisions to both broadcast slurs and censor free speech.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing the impact of words and the dangers of hasty judgment, adding, “The only good that can come from this is a reminder that words matter, that rushing to judgement about things we are not fully cognisant of is folly, and that all trauma must be recognised and honoured.” He concluded by acknowledging the artists whose achievements were diminished by the night’s events.

The incident prompted an immediate apology from Davidson himself, who expressed his deep mortification at the “pain and misunderstanding” his condition could cause. He explained that his involuntary tics are a manifestation of Tourette’s syndrome, a neurological condition, and are not intentional or reflective of his beliefs. As reported by NME, Davidson has dedicated his life to advocating for the Tourette’s community and promoting empathy and understanding.

BBC and BAFTA Responses

The BBC’s executive complaints unit launched an investigation, characterizing the broadcast of the slur as a “serious mistake.” The clip containing the slur has since been removed from the version of the BAFTAs ceremony available on BBC iPlayer. BAFTA also issued an apology, taking “full responsibility” for placing its guests in a “difficult situation” and extending apologies to Jordan and Lindo, as well as all those affected by the incident. BAFTA’s full statement can be found on NME.

Delroy Lindo, speaking after the event, expressed his disappointment that no one from BAFTA had reached out to him or Michael B. Jordan following the incident. He did, however, acknowledge the outpouring of support he and Jordan received, particularly at the NAACP Image Awards in California. Lindo’s comments were reported by NME, where he described the situation as a negative experience that ultimately became positive due to the support received.

Understanding Tourette’s Syndrome

Tourette’s syndrome, as explained by Tourette’s Action, is a neurological condition characterized by sudden, involuntary sounds or movements known as tics. These tics are not indicative of a person’s beliefs, intentions, or character. Davidson has lived with Tourette’s since the age of 12 and has become a prominent advocate for the condition, as depicted in the film I Swear, which details the origins, traits, and manifestations of the syndrome.

The Wider Cultural Conversation

The incident at the BAFTAs has also sparked a broader conversation about the representation of neurodiversity in media and the challenges faced by individuals with Tourette’s syndrome. A Saturday Night Live sketch that aired in the wake of the BAFTAs, featuring celebrities claiming to have Tourette’s, drew criticism for its insensitive portrayal of the condition. NME covered the controversy surrounding the SNL sketch, highlighting the concerns raised by disability advocates.

The BAFTA incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of live broadcasting and the potential for unforeseen events to disrupt carefully planned ceremonies. It also underscores the importance of sensitivity and responsible editorial decision-making when dealing with potentially offensive content.

Looking ahead, the BBC’s investigation is expected to provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding the broadcast of the slur and the rationale behind the editing choices made during the ceremony. The incident is likely to prompt a review of protocols for live broadcasts and a renewed focus on inclusivity and sensitivity in the entertainment industry.
