Alina Ibragimova Named SPCO’s New Artistic Planner | The Strad

Alina Ibragimova Named SPCO’s New Artistic Planner | The Strad

March 17, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) has announced a significant addition to its artistic leadership, naming violinist Alina Ibragimova as its newest artistic planner. The appointment, effective with the 2026/27 season, signals a deepening collaboration between the orchestra and a musician already recognized for her compelling interpretations and innovative approach to performance.

Ibragimova’s connection with the SPCO began in February 2024, when she debuted as a soloist, leading the orchestra through Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. She revisited the ensemble in January 2026, this time performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3. These performances, according to those within the orchestra, weren’t simply renditions of familiar works, but rather felt like fresh compositions unfolding in real time. As one SPCO musician reportedly commented after the Mozart performance, it was “like hearing the concerto for the first time, as if it were being composed on the spot.”

The role of artistic planner places Ibragimova among a select group of five artistic partners who contribute to the SPCO’s artistic vision. This collaborative model, championed by SPCO president and managing director Jessica Mallow Gulley, is designed to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives. Gulley emphasized that Ibragimova’s “artistry, imagination, and musical depth resonate beautifully with the innovative spirit of the SPCO musicians,” and expressed excitement about the “inspiring musical experiences” the partnership will yield.

Ibragimova herself expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “I’m really excited about this collaboration with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. They are absolutely wonderful. We already had some exciting projects together, and I can’t wait for the new adventures to approach!” This sentiment suggests a pre-existing rapport and a shared artistic sensibility that will likely shape the direction of future SPCO programming.

Jonathan Posthuma, the SPCO’s artistic planning director, echoed Gulley’s praise, describing Ibragimova’s playing as being “filled with richness, clarity, and imagination, whether she leads the orchestra in old works or new.” This versatility is a key attribute, suggesting Ibragimova will be instrumental in curating a diverse and engaging concert season.

Ibragimova’s reputation extends beyond her performances with the SPCO. Her website highlights her commitment to a broad repertoire, spanning from Baroque to contemporary compositions, and her willingness to explore both modern and period instruments. She is recognized for the “immediacy and honesty” of her performances, qualities that clearly resonated with the SPCO and contributed to her selection as an artistic planner.

The January 17, 2026 performance in St. Paul, Minnesota, at the Ordway Concert Hall, offered a glimpse into the kind of programming audiences can expect. The concert featured Schnittke’s “Moz-Art à la Haydn,” alongside Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 and Haydn’s Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor, showcasing a blend of established masterpieces and more contemporary works. Ibragimova led the orchestra as both violinist and director for this performance.

The SPCO’s decision to appoint Ibragimova reflects a broader trend within the orchestral world – a move towards more collaborative artistic leadership. Rather than relying solely on a single music director, orchestras are increasingly embracing the input of multiple artistic voices, fostering a more dynamic and responsive artistic environment. This approach allows for greater flexibility in programming and a wider range of perspectives, potentially attracting new audiences and reinvigorating existing ones.

While the specifics of Ibragimova’s planning responsibilities remain to be seen, her appointment undoubtedly marks an exciting new chapter for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Her established connection with the ensemble, combined with her artistic vision and commitment to both traditional and contemporary repertoire, positions her as a key figure in shaping the SPCO’s future artistic direction. The 2026/27 season promises to be one of significant artistic exploration and innovation under her guidance.
