Auckland Motorway: Father & Son Escape Injury After Bottle Thrown at Car

Auckland Motorway: Father & Son Escape Injury After Bottle Thrown at Car

March 1, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Auckland, New Zealand – A family’s evening commute turned frightening on Saturday evening when a vehicle traveling on State Highway 1 near the Cook Street exit was struck by what appears to be a thrown bottle. The incident, captured on the vehicle’s dashcam, has prompted a police investigation and raised concerns about safety on the busy motorway.

Jan, who has requested to be identified only by his first name, was driving south on State Highway 1 with his son after leaving North Shore Hospital at approximately 7:40 PM. He initially believed he had experienced a tire blowout or struck debris when he heard a “loud pop” from the roof of his car. Pulling over to the side of the road, he found no immediate evidence of what had occurred.

“I pulled over on the left side of the highway, looked around and saw nothing,” Jan told 1News. A subsequent review of his dashcam footage revealed the startling truth: a brown glass bottle arcing through the air before impacting the vehicle’s roof. The footage clearly shows the object in flight, leaving little doubt as to the cause of the damage.

The impact left two significant dents in the roof of the car, and liquid splashed across the vehicle’s exterior. Jan speculated the liquid was likely beer or another alcoholic beverage, though he cautiously added, “I just hope it wasn’t urine. I didn’t smell it.” Both Jan and his son were shaken by the incident, but thankfully, neither sustained injuries.

“We were a little bit shocked, to be honest,” Jan said. He further noted the potential for a far more serious outcome, stating, “If I had been going a bit slower or faster, it could have hit my windscreen. It would have been a whole lot different story.”

The incident underscores the potential dangers faced by drivers on New Zealand’s roadways. While seemingly isolated, such acts of reckless endangerment can have devastating consequences. Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and are reviewing the dashcam footage provided by Jan.

North Shore Hospital, where Jan and his son had been prior to the incident, is a major healthcare facility serving a large population in the North Shore, Waitakere, and Rodney areas of Auckland. According to information from Healthpoint and info.health.nz, the hospital provides a comprehensive range of acute care services, including surgical and medical beds, an Emergency Department, Intensive Care, a Maternity Unit, and specialized services like cardiology and renal care. The hospital is easily accessible via State Highway 1, specifically Exit 419 onto Northcote Road, then Taharoto Road and Shakespeare Road.

The hospital’s location, situated on the shores of Lake Pupuke and overlooking the Rangitoto Channel and Waitemata Harbour, offers a striking visual contrast to the potential dangers lurking nearby, as evidenced by this recent incident. The hospital similarly provides visiting specialist clinics in neurology and oncology, and boasts an Allied Health team including social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech language therapists.

While the motivation behind the bottle-throwing remains unknown, the incident raises broader questions about security and safety measures along major roadways. Authorities will likely review surveillance footage from nearby areas and consider increased patrols to deter similar acts of vandalism and reckless endangerment. The potential for serious injury or even fatality highlights the gravity of the situation.

The fact that this occurred near a major hospital adds another layer of concern. Individuals traveling to or from North Shore Hospital are often dealing with stressful or emotional situations, and the added threat of external danger is unacceptable. The hospital itself provides full paediatric and obstetric/gynaecological cover, with emergency physicians and intensivists on staff, emphasizing the vulnerable populations who rely on its services.

Jan’s decision to review his dashcam footage proved crucial in documenting the incident and providing evidence to police. Dashcams are becoming increasingly popular among drivers as a means of protecting themselves and providing valuable evidence in the event of an accident or criminal activity. This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential benefits of such technology.

As the police investigation unfolds, the community awaits answers and hopes for a swift resolution. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible behavior on the roads and the potential consequences of reckless actions. The focus now shifts to identifying the perpetrator and ensuring that such an incident does not occur again, safeguarding the well-being of all those who travel on State Highway 1.
