‘Bachelorette’ Season Canceled After Domestic Violence Video Emerges of Lead Taylor Frankie Paul

‘Bachelorette’ Season Canceled After Domestic Violence Video Emerges of Lead Taylor Frankie Paul

March 21, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Just when it felt like ABC was attempting a refresh, “The Bachelorette” has been pulled from the schedule before its premiere. The cancellation stems from a recently resurfaced video showing Taylor Frankie Paul, the intended lead for Season 22, involved in a violent altercation with her ex-partner, Dakota Mortensen, in 2023. The incident, partially documented in the Hulu series “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” has triggered a domestic violence investigation and prompted Hulu to pause production on Season 5 of that show as well.

The abrupt halt to “The Bachelorette” raises serious questions about the franchise’s vetting process and its ability to navigate increasingly complex off-screen issues. It also underscores a larger pattern of ratings decline and controversy that has plagued the series in recent years, leading many to wonder if it’s time to call it quits on “The Bachelor” universe altogether.

A Season Built on Transparency, Undone by the Past

Taylor Frankie Paul, a founder of the popular “MomTok” community and known for her candidness about her life – including a past experience with “soft-swinging” while married – initially seemed like a bold choice for the franchise. Showrunner Scott Teti told Vulture’s Rebecca Jennings that he found Paul to be “one of the most honest reality-TV stars that I’ve ever seen,” praising her inability to lie and her authentic nature. This perceived honesty was seen as a potential draw for viewers, a departure from the often-polished personas typically featured on the show.

However, that very transparency proved to be her undoing. The video of the 2023 assault, released by TMZ, brought a past she had openly discussed – but hadn’t fully reckoned with publicly – back to the forefront. Paul was charged with aggravated assault, two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, child abuse with injury and criminal mischief, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in August 2025, receiving a sentence that included substance and domestic violence evaluations and recommended treatment.

The Franchise’s Troubled Track Record

This isn’t the first time the “Bachelor” franchise has faced scandal. The show has a history of controversies, from accusations of racism during Matt James’s season in 2021, to offensive social media posts by contestants like Lee Garrett, and even a temporary shutdown of “Bachelor in Paradise” in 2017 following allegations of sexual assault. Former host Chris Harrison was ultimately fired for defending a contestant, Rachael Kirkconnell, after photos surfaced of her attending an antebellum plantation-themed ball.

These incidents have repeatedly sparked debate about the show’s responsibility to thoroughly vet its participants and address issues of race, privilege, and harmful behavior. The franchise has often been criticized for prioritizing drama over genuine connection and for failing to adequately protect its contestants.

Ratings Slump and a Shifting Television Landscape

Beyond the scandals, “The Bachelor” franchise has been struggling with declining viewership. Season 21 of “The Bachelorette,” featuring Jenn Tran, saw its finale hit record-low ratings in the 18-49 demographic, particularly due to competition from the Olympics, as reported by Bachelor Data. “The Golden Bachelorette” also experienced a lackluster premiere in September 2024, with viewership numbers falling short of expectations, according to Forbes.

The rise of alternative dating shows on streaming platforms like Peacock’s “Love Island USA” and Netflix’s “Love is Blind” has further fragmented the audience. These shows often offer a more diverse and less formulaic approach to reality dating, appealing to viewers who are growing tired of the “Bachelor” franchise’s predictable tropes.

The Financial Fallout and Future Uncertainty

The cancellation of Paul’s season is expected to cost ABC millions of dollars, as reported by Variety. The network had invested heavily in promoting the season, hoping that Paul’s unique background and social media following would attract a new audience. Now, they are left scrambling to salvage the situation and determine a path forward for the franchise.

The question now is whether ABC and Warner Bros. Unscripted TV will attempt to recast “The Bachelorette” for a mid-season run, or if they will simply move on to other projects. Given the negative publicity surrounding the cancellation, it seems unlikely that they will rush into a replacement. The network may also reconsider its vetting process for future contestants, implementing more rigorous background checks and psychological evaluations.

What’s Next for the Franchise?

The future of “The Bachelor” franchise remains uncertain. The show’s reliance on a tired formula, coupled with its repeated controversies, has eroded its appeal. While the franchise still has a dedicated fanbase, it is increasingly clear that it needs to evolve in order to survive. Whether that evolution will involve a fundamental shift in its approach to casting, storytelling, or representation remains to be seen. For now, the cancellation of Taylor Frankie Paul’s season serves as a stark reminder that the “Bachelor” franchise is facing an existential crisis.
