Bachelorette Season Paused Amid Domestic Violence Investigation of Star Taylor Frankie Paul

Bachelorette Season Paused Amid Domestic Violence Investigation of Star Taylor Frankie Paul

March 20, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The latest season of The Bachelorette is officially on hold. ABC has pulled the plug on the upcoming cycle, following the surfacing of novel details in the domestic-violence investigation involving star Taylor Frankie Paul. The decision, announced Thursday, brings an abrupt halt to production and raises questions about the future of the franchise’s plans for Paul.

The move comes as a leaked video surfaced showing an alleged incident between Paul and her ex-boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen, in 2023. In the video, Mortensen claims Paul struck their daughter with a metal chair during an altercation. This footage, combined with the ongoing police investigation, prompted Disney Entertainment Television to act. “In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family,” a spokesperson said in a statement to Rolling Stone.

A Controversial Casting, Now Paused

Paul, a TikTok influencer and personality on the series The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, was already a polarizing choice to lead the dating show. Her “soft-swinging” lifestyle, as described in Rolling Stone, sparked debate among fans even before the allegations of domestic violence came to light. The ongoing investigation launched by Utah police involving Paul and Mortensen further complicated matters, leading to initial concerns about the viability of her season.

Production on the fifth season of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has too been paused, signaling a broader impact of the situation on Paul’s television career. She pleaded guilty to a count of aggravated assault in connection with the incident with Mortensen, with other charges dismissed, according to KSLC.

Paul Responds, Cites Years of Abuse

Through a spokesperson, Paul expressed gratitude for ABC’s support while prioritizing the safety of her family. “Taylor is exceptionally grateful for ABC’s support as she prioritizes her family’s safety and security,” the statement, provided to The Hollywood Reporter, read. The statement further alleges years of “extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation” and indicates Paul is now “finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm.”

The spokesperson’s statement also broadened the scope of the issue, highlighting the struggles of many women who remain silent while enduring abusive relationships. “There are too many women who are suffering in silence as they survive aggressive, jealous ex-partners who refuse to let them move on with their lives,” the statement continued. “Taylor has remained silent out of fear of further abuse, retaliation and public shaming. She is currently exploring all of her options, seeking support, and preparing to own and share her story.”

A Timeline of Events

The situation unfolded rapidly in recent days. The leaked video, reportedly from the 2023 incident, quickly circulated online, prompting renewed scrutiny of Paul’s casting as The Bachelorette. The video allegedly shows Mortensen stating, “Your daughter just got hit in the head by a metal chair.” This prompted ABC to reassess its position and ultimately halt the season.

Paul and Mortensen share one child together, Ever True, born in March 2024. Paul also has two children from a previous marriage. Her relationship and pregnancy were documented on the first season of Mormon Wives, adding another layer of public exposure to the unfolding drama.

What’s Next for ‘The Bachelorette’?

The immediate future of The Bachelorette remains uncertain. ABC has not announced a timeline for resuming production or whether they will seek a replacement lead for the season. The network’s priority, according to their statement, is supporting Paul’s family during this tough time. The situation raises broader questions about the vetting process for reality television contestants and the responsibility networks have to address allegations of abuse.

Given the sensitive nature of the allegations and the ongoing investigation, a swift resolution is unlikely. ABC will likely need to carefully consider its options and navigate the legal and public relations implications before making any further announcements about the show’s future. The network faces a delicate balance between protecting its brand and addressing the serious concerns raised by the allegations against Paul.
