Banksy Unmasked: Does His Identity Change His Art’s Value?

Banksy Unmasked: Does His Identity Change His Art’s Value?

March 22, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

For decades, the identity of Banksy, the enigmatic street artist whose function appears on walls and in galleries around the world, has been a closely guarded secret. That secrecy, many believe, was integral to the power and mystique of his art. Now, a Reuters investigation claims to have unmasked the artist, sparking debate about whether knowing the man behind the moniker diminishes the impact of his work.

The investigation, published last week, points to Robin Gunningham, born around 1972, as the artist. Reuters detailed how a David Jones – a name Gunningham reportedly adopted legally – traveled to Ukraine in late 2022 with a known associate of Banksy’s, shortly before a series of murals began appearing in the war-torn region. Banksy himself later confirmed creating seven murals there, including a striking image of a child flipping over an adult practicing judo, a pointed commentary on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s well-known affinity for the sport.

The revelation has been met with a mixed reaction. Some fans expressed a sense of betrayal, comparing the feeling to discovering Santa Claus isn’t real. “I feel like they are telling me how a magic trick is done,” Thomas Evans, a Denver-based artist, told Reuters. “Sometimes I just aim for to enjoy the magic trick.”

Although, many art experts argue that the power of Banksy’s work lies not in his anonymity, but in the messages he conveys. His art, often satirical and politically charged, has consistently challenged authority and drawn attention to issues of injustice, oppression and inequality. From the streets of Bristol to the walls of Bethlehem and the bombed-out buildings of Ukraine, his work has resonated globally.

“People buy his works because they absolutely love it,” said Acoris Andipa, director of the Andipa gallery in London. “The main feedback that I receive is that they really, frankly, don’t care if they know who he is.”

The idea that anonymity is crucial to Banksy’s art isn’t modern. He emerged from a tradition of street artists who saw the act of creating art in public spaces as a subversive act, a direct challenge to established norms. The post-industrial landscape of Bristol served as his initial canvas, and his work quickly gained international recognition, predating the widespread influence of social media.

Interestingly, Banksy’s identity has been the subject of speculation for years. The Daily Mail reported in 2008 “compelling evidence suggesting” Gunningham was the artist, and the Associated Press covered similar detective work in 2016. Following the 2008 report, Reuters claims Banksy legally changed his name to David Jones, the second most popular name in Britain and also the given name of David Bowie – whose Ziggy Stardust persona inspired a 2012 Banksy painting of Queen Elizabeth II.

Banksy’s representatives have remained tight-lipped. His lawyer did not respond to requests for comment, and his spokeswoman declined to participate in the Reuters story. This silence, of course, is consistent with the artist’s long-standing practice of maintaining a veil of secrecy.

The revelation comes after a period of prolific activity for Banksy. In January 2025, his work was prominently featured at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. He also created a series of murals in London in 2025, and his art has continued to fetch high prices at auction, including a piece sold to benefit victims of the war in Ukraine.

There’s even speculation that Banksy orchestrated this latest round of revelations. He has a history of stunts and satire, and the fact that he hasn’t denied the Reuters report has fueled this theory. Madeleine White, senior sales and acquisitions consultant at London’s Hang-Up Gallery, suggested that “all publicity is good publicity” in Banksy’s case.

Reuters stated it deliberately withheld some information gathered during its investigation, citing Banksy’s status as a public figure and the broad impact of his work. The news agency also noted that much of his art is created on property not his own.

the debate over whether Banksy’s identity matters highlights the complex relationship between artist and artwork. Some argue that the mystery was essential to his appeal, while others maintain that the power of his message transcends the identity of its creator. As Joe Syer, a Banksy expert and founder of MyArtBroker, put it, “And that’s where the real relevance, and value, sits.”

Christopher Banks, founder of the New York-based Objects of Affection Collection, views the unmasking as a “structural stress test” of Banksy’s system of maintaining anonymity. He believes that the artist’s best work stands on its own, regardless of who created it, pointing to the murals in Ukraine as evidence of his commitment to solidarity and his ability to connect with audiences on a human level.

“The name matters less than the presence. The presence was always what the work was about,” Banks concluded.
