Banksy’s Identity Revealed? Reuters Names Street Artist as Robin Gunningham

Banksy’s Identity Revealed? Reuters Names Street Artist as Robin Gunningham

March 15, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

For decades, the identity of the enigmatic street artist known as Banksy has been one of the art world’s most closely guarded secrets. Now, a new investigation by Reuters suggests the mystery may finally be solved. The outlet reports that Banksy is likely Robin Gunningham, a Bristol-born artist who rose to prominence in the 1990s.

The investigation points to a 2000 arrest in New York City as a key piece of evidence. According to police records, a man named Robin Gunningham was arrested for vandalism after defacing a billboard. While this alone doesn’t definitively prove his identity, Reuters’ reporting builds a compelling case, tracing a potential name change and subsequent movements that align with Banksy’s known activities.

The report suggests that Gunningham may have legally changed his name to David Jones as early as 2008, a move that would provide a significant layer of anonymity. This isn’t merely speculation; the name “David Jones” is remarkably common in the UK, offering a plausible disguise. Reuters notes that in 2017, there were approximately 6,000 men named David Jones residing in the UK. The choice of name also carries a subtle artistic nod, referencing the iconic musician David Bowie, whose alter ego Ziggy Stardust has been a source of inspiration for Banksy’s work, including a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in Bowie’s style.

Further bolstering the claim, Reuters reports that a man matching Gunningham’s description, traveling under the name David Jones, entered Ukraine in October 2022, around the time Banksy’s anti-war murals began appearing in the country. The birthdate on the passport used by this David Jones reportedly matches Gunningham’s.

Banksy’s work first gained significant attention in the 1990s in his hometown of Bristol, UK. One of his earliest known pieces, “Mild Mild West,” depicting a teddy bear throwing a Molotov cocktail, remains a landmark in the city’s Stokes Croft neighborhood. The artist’s style, characterized by stencils and subversive imagery, quickly gained a following, and his work began appearing across London and beyond.

The 2000s saw the emergence of some of Banksy’s most recognizable pieces, including “Girl with Balloon” (2002), “Laugh Now” (2002), “Kissing Coppers” (2004), and “Flower Thrower” (2003). These works, often imbued with political and social commentary, cemented Banksy’s reputation as a provocative and influential artist.

Over the past decade, Banksy’s reach has expanded globally. In 2011, his “Gorilla in a Pink Mask” mural in Bristol was accidentally painted over but quickly restored. In 2018, he created “Season’s Greetings” in Wales, a piece depicting a child playing in what appears to be ash falling like snow. The following year, a mural depicting a homeless man sleeping on a bench with reindeer painted onto it appeared in Birmingham.

His 2022 series of murals in Ukraine, created amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia, brought his work to a new audience and underscored his commitment to using art as a form of protest. These murals, painted on damaged buildings, served as powerful statements against the war.

While Reuters’ investigation presents a strong case, the artist’s representatives have offered a carefully worded response. Banksy’s lawyer, Mark Stephens, stated that “many of the details contained within your enquiry are not correct,” but stopped short of denying the claims outright. Stephens also emphasized the importance of anonymity for artists, arguing that it “protects freedom of expression…particularly when addressing sensitive issues.” He further suggested that the artist may have intentionally killed off the “Robin Gunningham” narrative years ago.

The revelation, if confirmed, doesn’t diminish the impact of Banksy’s work. For over three decades, the artist has challenged conventions, sparked conversations, and captivated audiences with his unique blend of artistry and activism. Whether known as Robin Gunningham or simply as Banksy, his legacy as one of the most vital and influential street artists of our time remains secure. The question now is whether this unmasking will alter the nature of his art, or simply add another layer to the enduring mystery surrounding this elusive figure.
