Belly Fat: Why It’s Dangerous & How to Lose It Effectively

Belly Fat: Why It’s Dangerous & How to Lose It Effectively

March 8, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The quest to “blast belly fat” is, frankly, a myth. Despite a relentless barrage of infomercials and influencer pitches promising targeted fat loss, science says it simply doesn’t work. You can’t choose where your body sheds pounds, but that doesn’t mean reducing abdominal fat is impossible. In fact, understanding why belly fat is particularly dangerous—and how it differs from other fat stores—is the first step toward a healthier approach.

Chris Mohr, PhD, RD, cofounder of Mohr Results, cuts straight to the point: “You can’t spot reduce, no matter how promising the marketing and ads that tell you that’s the case,” he says. “Whereas it would be nice if you could lose fat from wherever you’d like, your body handles fat as it wants.”

Why Visceral Fat Demands Attention

For years, the focus has been on the number on the scale, or even how clothes fit. But not all fat is created equal. The fat around your midsection – often called “belly fat” – is more accurately described as visceral fat. Unlike subcutaneous fat, which sits just under the skin and is generally considered less harmful, visceral fat accumulates deep within the abdomen, surrounding vital organs like the heart, liver, and intestines. It’s not something you can pinch, making it harder to assess visually.

Rekha Kumar, MD, MS, chief medical officer at Found, explains the danger: “The reason visceral fat matters is it is highly inflammatory.” This inflammation isn’t just a discomfort; it’s linked to a significantly increased risk of serious health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and even dementia. A Kaiser Permanente study, for example, found that men with high levels of visceral fat were more than three times as likely to develop dementia. Research has similarly connected it to asthma and various types of cancer.

Measuring Your Risk: Beyond the Scale

While a CT or DEXA scan provides the most accurate measurement of visceral fat, those aren’t practical options for most people. Fortunately, a simple waist-to-hip ratio can offer a useful indicator. Dr. Kumar recommends calculating this ratio: “For a man, we don’t want it over one, meaning we don’t want the waist to have a larger circumference than the hips. Low health risk is 0.95 or lower. And then high health risk is one or higher.”

Other potential warning signs include elevated blood sugar, low testosterone levels, and even snoring or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms suggest a buildup of fat around internal organs, potentially impacting their function.

How to Approach Fat Loss Effectively

Gaining visceral fat often happens when subcutaneous fat stores are full, and excess calories are diverted to deeper, more dangerous locations. The key isn’t to target belly fat specifically, but to create a calorie deficit and optimize your lifestyle for overall fat loss.

The Power of Resistance Training and HIIT

Conventional wisdom often points to cardio as the primary fat-burning activity. However, research suggests that resistance training may be even more effective at reducing waistline size. A Harvard study tracking over 10,500 American men for 12 years found that weight training was superior to aerobic exercise in reducing abdominal fat.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) also plays a crucial role. Alternating between short bursts of intense exercise and brief recovery periods can boost metabolism and promote fat loss.

Dietary Considerations

While exercise is essential, diet remains a cornerstone of any successful fat loss strategy. Focusing on whole, unprocessed foods, lean protein, and healthy fats can help create a calorie deficit and support overall health. Reducing intake of sugary drinks, processed foods, and excessive saturated fats is also critical.

Lifestyle Factors

Beyond diet and exercise, several lifestyle factors can influence visceral fat accumulation. Prioritizing sleep, managing stress, and limiting alcohol consumption are all key steps. Chronic stress, in particular, can lead to increased cortisol levels, which can promote visceral fat storage.

Mohr Results: A Focus on Wellbeing

Chris and Kara Mohr, founders of Mohr Results, emphasize a holistic approach to wellbeing. Their programs focus on developing customized plans to help individuals and teams perform at their best, both personally and professionally. They work with a range of clients, from individuals seeking to boost their energy levels to large corporations aiming to improve employee wellbeing. Their “Reboot Your Energy In 7 Days!” program, for example, aims to help participants perceive energetic, strong, and full of life in a short timeframe.

The core philosophy behind Mohr Results, as they explain on their website, is about achieving success and happiness without sacrificing family or relationships, and finding joy and energy in everyday life. This approach aligns with the understanding that sustainable fat loss isn’t just about physical changes, but about creating a lifestyle that supports long-term health and wellbeing.

shedding belly fat isn’t about chasing a quick fix or falling for misleading marketing. It’s about adopting a sustainable, holistic approach to health that prioritizes exercise, nutrition, and overall wellbeing. It’s a long game, but one with significant rewards for your health and quality of life.
