Blight: Survival Gets New Trailer & 2026 Update After 1.5M Steam Wishlists
After a period of relative silence, the medieval action-horror co-op survival game Blight: Survival is back in the spotlight. The project, initially revealed in 2022, has reemerged with a new gameplay trailer and a significant milestone: 1.5 million wishlists on Steam. This resurgence comes as publisher Behaviour Interactive, known for the popular asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight, and developer Haenir Studio prepare for small-scale playtests designed to shape the game’s future.
The original announcement trailer for Blight: Survival garnered substantial attention, racking up 3.9 million views on IGN’s YouTube channel alone (watch it here). The new trailer showcases in-engine footage, offering a closer look at the game’s combat finishers. This renewed push signals a significant step forward for the project, which has been undergoing substantial development since its initial reveal.
A Rebuild Driven by Community Response
The path to this point hasn’t been without its challenges. Following the viral response to the initial trailer and the impressive Steam wishlist numbers, Haenir Studio partnered with Behaviour Interactive and embarked on a substantial rebuild of Blight: Survival’s core systems. Ulrik Langvandsbråten, creative director and cofounder at Haenir Studio, initiated this overhaul, recognizing the need to refine the game based on early feedback and the weight of player expectations.
Ashley Pannell, senior creative director on Blight: Survival at Behaviour Interactive, acknowledged the pressure that comes with such a strong initial response. “We understand the heightened expectations of what we are being asked to deliver upon here,” Pannell told IGN. However, he framed this pressure as a positive force, stating that it will ultimately result in a better game. The team is actively engaging with the community through small-scale playtests, incorporating player feedback directly into the development process.
What is Blight: Survival?
Blight: Survival is set in a brutal medieval world ravaged by a deadly affliction. Players will team up – up to four players can participate – to fight against both monstrous creatures and warring factions in a desperate attempt to destroy the source of the Blight. The game aims to deliver a tense, risk-reward driven experience, blending elements of action horror with exploration and extraction mechanics.
Pannell emphasized that combat in Blight: Survival will be a core focus, with every encounter presenting a calculated risk. “Every combat you enter will have a risk and reward,” he explained. “Risk reward is a key element of the overall driving part of many features in the game.” The developers are drawing inspiration from a variety of genres, including action horror, but also incorporating elements from extraction-focused games like Helldivers and Deep Rock Galactic.
The extraction mechanics in Blight: Survival won’t be a direct clone of other titles in the genre. Players will face a crucial decision: bank their accumulated rewards or risk pushing further for greater gains. “We have loss in our game, and the decision whether to bank that or keep it at some point in the game will become a key choice the player makes,” Pannell teased. This system aims to create a dynamic and engaging gameplay loop, where players constantly weigh the potential benefits against the inherent dangers.
Addressing Skepticism in a Changing Gaming Landscape
The gaming landscape has shifted considerably since Blight: Survival was first announced in 2022. Gamers are increasingly wary of ambitious projects that fail to deliver on their promises, or worse, turn out to be scams. Pannell acknowledged this skepticism, stating that the development team is acutely aware of the need to prove that Blight: Survival is a legitimate and high-quality game. “From a dev team perspective, we obviously understand that we’re building a real game every day, every moment,” he said. The team’s focus is on delivering a fun and engaging experience that meets – and hopefully exceeds – player expectations.
The Road Ahead: Playtests and Community Feedback
While a firm release date remains unconfirmed, development is actively progressing. Behaviour Interactive and Haenir Studio are currently conducting small-scale playtests with members of the Blight: Survival Discord community, which boasts over 45,000 members. This ongoing feedback loop is crucial to ensuring that the game aligns with player desires and delivers on the promise of its initial reveal. The developers are committed to transparency and open communication with their community, recognizing that their support is essential to the project’s success.
The team is prioritizing the core elements of fun and quality, aiming to create a compelling action-horror experience that stands out in a crowded market. The next steps involve continuing to refine the game based on playtest feedback and providing further updates to the community as development progresses. While 2026 won’t see a release, the increased activity and commitment to community engagement suggest that Blight: Survival is steadily moving closer to becoming a reality.
