Bob Power, Influential Hip-Hop & R&B Engineer, Dies at 73

Bob Power, Influential Hip-Hop & R&B Engineer, Dies at 73

March 3, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Bob Power, the influential engineer whose sonic fingerprints are all over landmark hip-hop and R&B albums from the 1990s and 2000s, has died. He was 73. The news was announced Sunday by Okayplayer, the music platform founded by The Roots’ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and has since been widely mourned across the music industry.

Power’s work with artists like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, and The Roots helped define the sound of a generation. He wasn’t simply a technician; artists consistently described him as a creative partner who understood how to elevate their vision. His passing marks a significant loss for the music community.

A Sonic Architect of Golden Age Hip-Hop

Born in Chicago in 1952 and raised outside New York City, Power’s journey began with a guitar, sparked by a sister learning to play “Blowin’ in the Wind.” As he recounted on his website’s timeline, he immediately wanted to “play it louder.” This early fascination with sound evolved into a career that would shape the landscape of modern music. He studied music theory and composition at Webster University in St. Louis, and honed his skills playing in an R&B band called the New Direction before eventually returning to New York.

Power’s breakthrough came in 1984 at Calliope Studios, filling in for a vacationing engineer and landing a project with Stetsasonic, which featured Prince Paul, who would later grow a key producer for De La Soul. This connection proved pivotal, leading to his work on De La Soul’s groundbreaking album, “De La Soul Is Dead,” and establishing his reputation for innovative sound design.

He was celebrated for his ability to bring a distinctive “oomph” to drums and seamlessly weave samples into productions. Among his most iconic credits are A Tribe Called Quest’s “The Low Conclude Theory,” D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar,” Erykah Badu’s “Baduizm,” and Common’s “Like Water for Chocolate.” These albums weren’t just commercially successful; they were critically acclaimed and remain influential touchstones for artists today.

“The King of the Low End”

The Roots, who prominently featured Power in their song “Distortion to Static” – with Black Thought rapping, “Coming to New York to mix / It’s Bob Power with the snares and kicks to fix” – were among the first to publicly acknowledge his passing. Questlove’s heartfelt Instagram post described Power as “the KING of the Low End,” adding that “Before Bob, Hip Hop was chaotic & muddy…but man—when Bob entered our sonic sphere? Jesus.”

The sentiment was echoed by other prominent figures in the industry. DJ Premier, on X (formerly Twitter), called Power “one of the iLLest Engineers of all time,” while Young Guru, known for his long collaboration with Jay-Z, hailed him as “an absolute legend” on Instagram, stating that Power was “the man who I patterned my sound after.” These testimonials underscore the profound impact Power had on the craft of audio engineering and the artists he worked with.

Beyond the Boards: Teaching and Recognition

Power’s influence extended beyond the recording studio. He was nominated for two Grammy Awards for his work on Meshell Ndegeocello’s “Peace Beyond Passion” and India.Arie’s “Acoustic Soul.” He also dedicated over a decade to education, beginning in 2006 as an arts professor at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, where he retired last year. This commitment to teaching reflects his desire to pass on his knowledge and passion to the next generation of audio engineers.

In a 2007 interview with Tape Op magazine, Power articulated his philosophy on record-making: “One of my theories about record-making in general is that if the track is rhythmically buoyant, or sort of interesting enough, then you don’t have to sell the song so hard.” He believed that a compelling rhythmic foundation was paramount, even in stripped-down arrangements. This approach is evident in the timeless quality of the records he engineered.

A Diverse and Enduring Legacy

Power’s discography is remarkably diverse, encompassing projects with Ozomatli, Angie Stone, David Byrne, and Brockhampton, demonstrating his versatility and willingness to collaborate across genres. His ability to adapt his skills to different musical styles while maintaining a signature sonic quality is a testament to his talent and artistry. Angie Stone’s passing earlier this year further underscores the recent losses within the R&B and hip-hop communities.

Details regarding memorial services or tributes have not yet been announced. His sister, Robin, is among his survivors.

What remains unclear is the cause of death and the specific location where he passed, as Okayplayer’s initial announcement did not provide those details. Further information is expected to be released by his family and representatives in the coming days.
