Bon Jovi Biopic: Universal Pictures to Chronicle Rock Band’s Rise to Fame

Bon Jovi Biopic: Universal Pictures to Chronicle Rock Band’s Rise to Fame

March 11, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Universal Pictures is moving forward with a biopic focused on the early years of Bon Jovi, the New Jersey band that became a global rock phenomenon. The project, confirmed by Deadline and The Guardian, will trace the band’s ascent from local clubs to stadium headliners, a journey fueled by hits like “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Terrible Name.” The film arrives as part of a broader resurgence of music biopics, following successes like Straight Outta Compton and 8 Mile, both produced by Universal.

From Perth Amboy to the World Stage

The biopic will center on the formative years of Bon Jovi, a period that saw Jon Bongiovi – born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey – transform from a local musician with a Christmas-gift electric guitar into a rock icon. As Jon Bon Jovi recalled to The Guardian in 2024, he possessed a youthful conviction – “I was just dumb enough to believe it” – that propelled him forward. That early ambition led him to work as an assistant at the Power Station recording studio in New York City, where he observed established stars like Mick Jagger and Diana Ross, experiences that undoubtedly shaped his own musical path.

Bon Jovi’s breakthrough came with the release of Slippery When Wet in 1986, an album that catapulted the band to superstardom. The album spawned multiple chart-topping singles and established Bon Jovi as a dominant force in the late 1980s rock scene. The band’s impact extended beyond record sales. they became a defining act of the era, culminating in a performance at the 1989 Moscow Music Peace Festival before an audience of 100,000.

Behind the Scenes: Creative Team and Prior Work

Cody Brotter has been tapped to write the screenplay. Brotter’s previous work includes the Black List script Drudge, about the rise of political journalist Matt Drudge, and rewrites for projects like the crypto thriller Killing Satoshi. He also penned The Dukes of Oxy for MGM and Chasing Phil for Team Downey, demonstrating a versatility that suggests he’s well-suited to navigate the complexities of a band biopic.

The film will be produced by Kevin J. Walsh, whose credits include Manchester By the Sea and House of Gucci, and Gotham Chopra. Chopra’s involvement is particularly noteworthy, as he directed the 2024 Hulu documentary series Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. That four-part series, released to coincide with the band’s 40th anniversary, offered unprecedented access to the band members and explored both their triumphs and challenges, including addiction issues and Jon Bon Jovi’s vocal surgery scare. The Guardian’s Jack Seale described the documentary as “a surprisingly devastating rumination on lost youth.”

What the Documentary Revealed

Thank You, Goodnight didn’t shy away from the band’s struggles. The documentary explored the personal battles faced by band members and the health crisis that threatened Jon Bon Jovi’s career. This willingness to confront challenging truths suggests that the upcoming biopic may also delve into the less glamorous aspects of the band’s journey, offering a more nuanced portrayal than a purely celebratory account.

Casting Considerations and Family Involvement

Interestingly, Jon Bon Jovi has already considered who might portray him on screen. In a 2025 interview, he revealed that his son, Jake Bongiovi – who starred in the 2024 romcom Sweethearts – would be his top choice, after being inspired by watching the Springsteen biopic, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere. However, casting details remain unconfirmed at this stage.

The Current Landscape of Music Biopics

The timing of this announcement comes amidst a renewed interest in music biopics. The success of films like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman has demonstrated the commercial viability of the genre, and Universal Pictures has clearly taken note. The upcoming release of a lost George Michael film and live album in 2026, as reported by Deadline, further underscores the current appetite for stories about music legends.

What’s Next for the Bon Jovi Biopic?

Production timelines remain fluid. With Cody Brotter attached as the screenwriter, the next key step will be finalizing the script. Following script approval, the focus will shift to casting and pre-production. Given the scope of the project – covering the band’s formative years and rise to fame – a late 2027 or 2028 release window seems plausible, though Universal has not yet announced a specific date. The studio will likely be aiming for a festival premiere to generate early buzz, followed by a wide theatrical release.
