Bridgerton’s Francesca: New Romance & LGBTQ+ Representation in Season 5
Bridgerton fans are buzzing over a significant storyline shift for Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) as the series prepares for its fifth season. What began as a faithful adaptation of Julia Quinn’s novels is now charting a course toward greater LGBTQIA+ representation, with Francesca’s romantic future taking an unexpected turn. The change, from a male love interest to a female one, has sparked both excitement and questions among the devoted readership and viewership.
The shift centers on Francesca’s evolving connection with Michaela (Masali Baduza), a character reimagined from the original novel’s Michael. This development was subtly foreshadowed at the close of Season 3, leaving viewers intrigued and eager to learn more. As showrunner Jess Brownell explained to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision stemmed from a desire to authentically portray queer joy, rather than focusing on trauma.
A Departure from the Page, with Author’s Blessing
For those unfamiliar, Francesca’s storyline in Quinn’s books involves a marriage to John Stirling, followed by a subsequent romance with John’s cousin, Michael. The Netflix adaptation initially followed this path, introducing John (Victor Ali) as Francesca’s husband. However, the creative team opted to alter the narrative, introducing Michaela and hinting at a blossoming connection. “When we started talking about queer representation in the show, we started discussing that this show is always about finding happiness and we’re not interested in queer trauma—and that we really want to see queer joy,” Brownell told Diversity in June 2024.
This change wasn’t made lightly. Brownell acknowledged the potential challenges of portraying a same-sex relationship within the historical context of the Regency era, emphasizing the extensive research undertaken to ensure authenticity. “So we did a lot of research into how we could make that perform within the scope of our world,” she explained. The showrunner also secured the blessing of Quinn herself, who expressed support for the adaptation’s direction. Quinn shared her thoughts on Instagram, stating she trusted the show’s creative team and believed the resulting story would be “as emotional and heartbreaking” as the original.
Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza: A Budding Connection
Hannah Dodd, who took on the role of Francesca in Season 3 after replacing Ruby Stokes, expressed her enthusiasm for the storyline. “I’m very proud to be telling this story,” Dodd told Tudum. “This show is about people, and everyone deserves representation on screen. It’s amazing that my character can bring happiness to people who are used to suffering. That makes me very happy.”
The chemistry between Dodd and Baduza was immediately apparent to the production team. Brownell recounted to Glamour that after Baduza’s audition, Dodd remarked, “She’s the one.” Brownell praised Baduza as a “fantastic actress” and highlighted the importance of portraying the relationship with sensitivity and nuance.
Beyond Francesca: Expanding LGBTQIA+ Representation
The shift in Francesca’s storyline isn’t the only indication of Bridgerton’s commitment to inclusivity. Season 3 also subtly explored Benedict Bridgerton’s (Luke Thompson) potential attraction to men. Thompson expressed his support for Francesca’s evolving narrative, stating to Entertainment Weekly, “It’s wonderful to welcome positive and happy queer love stories (that aren’t all about angst or tragedy or things going wrong).”
Thompson elaborated on Benedict’s journey of self-discovery, describing it as a process of “curiosity” and liberation from labels. He noted that the show’s approach allows Benedict to explore his feelings without the pressure of defining his identity. “It feels like he’s dealing with his feelings with a sense of freedom from labels around it,” Thompson explained. “Which is refreshing. There’s a little bit of anger about it. It’s refreshing to see someone deal with that side of themselves without worrying about what it means.”
What’s Next for Francesca and Michaela?
While the exact timeline remains unclear, Brownell has confirmed that Michaela will have a more prominent role in the upcoming season. “You’ll see more of Michaela next season,” she told Entertainment Weekly. The showrunner also hinted at a time jump, acknowledging the established two-year marriage between Francesca and John in the source material. “We want to really respect Francesca and John’s relationship, even as we advise a twisty story with Francesca,” Brownell explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “We don’t want to erase that relationship.”
The creative team is mindful of balancing the new romance with the established history between Francesca and John, allowing Francesca time to grieve the loss of her marriage while exploring her feelings for Michaela. As Brownell stated, the goal is to tell a story that honors both relationships and demonstrates that different forms of love—whether passionate or companionate—hold equal value. The production is currently underway, with a release date for Season 4 yet to be announced. Fans can anticipate a continuation of the series’ signature blend of romance, drama, and social commentary, now with a more inclusive and representative lens.
As for what comes next, the production team is focused on delivering a compelling and emotionally resonant story for Francesca and Michaela. The show’s commitment to queer joy, coupled with the talented cast and creative team, suggests that Season 4 will be a landmark moment for Bridgerton and its audience.
