Challengers Cast: What Zendaya, Josh O’Connor & Mike Faist Are Doing Next

Challengers Cast: What Zendaya, Josh O’Connor & Mike Faist Are Doing Next

March 1, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The buzz around Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” hasn’t quite faded, and it seems the film’s breakout stars – Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist – are already lining up their next projects. While the ending of “Challengers” sparked debate (Zendaya herself called it “confusing” in a recent interview with The New York Times), the trajectories of its cast are becoming increasingly clear, signaling a busy period ahead for all three actors.

Zendaya: From the Court to the Desert

Zendaya’s performance in “Challengers” cemented her status as a box office draw, marking Guadagnino’s highest-opening film to date, surpassing the numbers achieved with “Call Me By Your Name.” The film’s success builds on her already impressive resume, which includes roles in the “Spider-Man” franchise and the recently released “Dune: Part Two.” Fans anticipating more of Zendaya in the sci-fi universe are in luck: director Denis Villeneuve has teased a larger role for her character, Chani, in the planned third installment of the “Dune” adaptations.

However, Zendaya’s schedule remains somewhat uncertain. The highly anticipated third season of HBO’s “Euphoria” has been delayed, leaving fans waiting for the continuation of Rue Bennett’s story. The delay is reportedly due to scheduling conflicts, and a firm return date has yet to be announced. Despite her busy schedule, Zendaya has expressed a desire to eventually direct, though she admits she doesn’t yet sense “confident enough” to take on the role.

Josh O’Connor: A Guadagnino Reunion and Beyond

Josh O’Connor isn’t straying far from the creative orbit of Luca Guadagnino. He’s already confirmed to star in Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel “Separate Rooms.” The project will spot O’Connor playing Leo, an Italian writer grappling with grief after the loss of his boyfriend. The film, penned by Francesca Manieri (who previously collaborated with Guadagnino on “We Are Who We Are”), promises another complex exploration of relationships, mirroring the dynamic at the heart of “Challengers.”

O’Connor’s momentum doesn’t stop there. He recently appeared in “La Chimera,” an Italy-set feature released earlier in 2024. He also has a supporting role in “Lee,” a biopic starring Kate Winslet, set during World War II. The trailer for “Lee” offers a glimpse into O’Connor’s portrayal of a character within this historical drama. Adding another layer to his diverse portfolio, O’Connor is currently filming “History of Sound,” a queer period drama alongside Paul Mescal, based on a short story of the same name. He’s also set to appear in Karim Aïnouz’s “Rosebushpruning,” alongside Kristen Stewart and Elle Fanning. And, in a playful moment, O’Connor has even expressed interest in taking on a “darker” version of Willy Wonka, calling it a “dream role.”

Mike Faist: From Tennis Courts to Wartime Thrillers

Mike Faist, who captivated audiences with his nuanced performance in “Challengers,” is also poised for a busy period. After showcasing his talents on stage in productions like “Dear Evan Hansen” and a recent adaptation of “Brokeback Mountain,” Faist is set to appear in “The Bikeriders,” a long-awaited film. The film, starring Austin Butler and Jodie Comer, promises a gritty appear into the world of motorcycle clubs in the 1960s.

Behind the Scenes: What’s Next for Guadagnino and Kuritzkes

The creative forces behind “Challengers” aren’t slowing down either. Director Luca Guadagnino is not only reuniting with Josh O’Connor for “Separate Rooms” but is also set to helm the adaptation of “Queer,” with Justin Kuritzkes penning the screenplay. Kuritzkes described the process of adapting Burroughs’ operate as a meeting point between the author’s voice and his own, guided by Guadagnino’s vision. Guadagnino is also attached to direct “After the Hunt,” starring Andrew Garfield and Julia Roberts, a dramatic thriller exploring themes of accusation and hidden secrets.

Kuritzkes, having made his feature debut with “Challengers,” is also adapting “City on Fire” with Austin Butler attached to star. This demonstrates a clear momentum for the screenwriter, building on the success of his first major project.

The Sound of Success: Reznor and Ross Continue Their Collaboration

The atmospheric score of “Challengers,” crafted by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, played a crucial role in enhancing the film’s tension and emotional resonance. The duo is continuing their collaboration with Guadagnino, composing the score for “Queer.” Reznor and Ross, known for their work on films like “The Social Network” and “Soul,” have established themselves as a go-to team for filmmakers seeking distinctive and evocative soundtracks. Their continued partnership with Guadagnino suggests a shared artistic sensibility and a commitment to pushing creative boundaries.

With a slate of compelling projects on the horizon, the cast and crew of “Challengers” are proving that their success wasn’t a fleeting moment. Each member is embarking on new ventures, promising a continued stream of captivating storytelling for audiences to anticipate.
