Chappell Roan Responds to Accusations of Security Confronting Jorginho’s Daughter
Chappell Roan is addressing accusations made by Brazilian soccer star Jorginho Frello regarding an incident involving his 11-year-ancient daughter at a hotel in São Paulo. The situation unfolded following Roan’s performance at Lollapalooza Brazil over the weekend, quickly escalating into a public dispute and even prompting a call for the singer to be banned from a major event in Rio de Janeiro.
Frello initially took to Instagram on Saturday to detail what he described as a “very sad situation.” According to his account, his daughter noticed Roan at breakfast but did not attempt to interact with her, simply glancing in her direction and smiling before returning to her mother. Frello alleges that a member of Roan’s security team then approached his daughter and spoke to her “extremely aggressively,” accusing her of “disrespect” and “harassment” and threatening to involve hotel management. “My daughter got super scared and cried a lot,” Frello wrote in his post.
The allegations quickly gained traction online, sparking a wave of criticism directed at Roan. The controversy even reached the office of the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, who publicly stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Roan would not be welcome to perform at “Todo Mundo no Rio!” – a significant cultural event in the city.
Roan responded to the accusations on Sunday via an Instagram Story video, offering her perspective on the events. She was quick to clarify that the security personnel involved was not part of her personal security team. “I’m just gonna tell my half of the story of what happened today with a mother and child who were involved with a security guard who is not my personal security,” she explained. “I didn’t even see. I didn’t even see a woman and a child. Like, I did not. No one came up to me. No one bothered me.”
Roan emphasized that she was simply having breakfast at her hotel and was unaware of any interaction occurring nearby. “I think these people were staying at the hotel as well,” she continued. “So the fact that, like, a security guard who is — I did not inquire the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child. I did not. They did not approach up to me. They weren’t doing anything. It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe because there’s no action even taken.”
The singer addressed concerns about her demeanor towards fans, acknowledging past incidents where she has set firm boundaries regarding interactions with the public and paparazzi, most notably during Paris Fashion Week. Despite these instances, Roan was emphatic in stating, “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children. Like, that is crazy. I’m sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you would do something, and if you felt uncomfortable that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.”
Roan’s response comes after a series of events highlighting the challenges artists face in navigating public attention and maintaining personal space. Her previous experiences with overzealous fans and paparazzi, documented during Paris Fashion Week, led to a public discussion about the expectations placed on performers and the need for respectful boundaries. At that time, Roan was filmed requesting distance from photographers and autograph seekers, stating, “I’m being disregarded as a human… I’ve asked these people several times to get away from me.”
Following the Paris Fashion Week incident, several fellow musicians publicly voiced their support for Roan. Noah Kahan took to Instagram to express his frustration with paparazzi and scalpers, suggesting they “eat fucking nails.” Doja Cat also weighed in, commending Roan’s ability to “be uncomfortable, comfortably” when dealing with unwanted attention. These displays of solidarity underscore a growing awareness within the music industry regarding the pressures faced by artists and the importance of advocating for their well-being.
The current situation with Jorginho Frello raises questions about the role of security personnel in protecting both artists and members of the public, and the potential for miscommunication or overreach. While Roan maintains that the security guard was not under her direct employment, the incident has nonetheless damaged her public image in Brazil and led to calls for her exclusion from a prominent event. The outcome of this dispute, and the response from event organizers in Rio de Janeiro, remains to be seen.
This incident also highlights the complexities of navigating fan interactions, particularly when children are involved. Roan’s statement emphasizes her lack of animosity towards children, but the initial allegations have already sparked a significant backlash. The situation serves as a reminder of the potential for misunderstandings and the importance of clear communication in public spaces.
