Christiania: Inside Denmark’s Anarchist Commune & New Documentary Film

Christiania: Inside Denmark’s Anarchist Commune & New Documentary Film

March 11, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Copenhagen’s Freetown Christiania, the famed anarchist commune established in 1971, is the subject of a new documentary premiering at CPH:DOX this week. Christiania, directed by Karl Friis Forchhammer, who was born within the community, offers an intimate gaze at the 32-hectare “social experiment” and its complex history, from its origins as an occupied military base to its present-day struggles with drug-related violence and external pressures. The film arrives as the commune continues to navigate its delicate balance between radical democracy, free expression, and the realities of maintaining a self-governing society within a major European capital.

An Insider’s Perspective on a Danish Icon

Forchhammer’s personal connection to Christiania is central to the film’s approach. As he explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, his parents met within the commune’s early days, drawn to its ethos of freedom and alternative living. Stories of the community’s eccentric characters – including, memorably, an alcoholic black bear named Rikke – were a constant presence in his childhood. However, he deliberately waited to begin the project until he felt ready to tackle its complexities. “It was a life that I didn’t live, and a life that I could only imagine,” Forchhammer told THR. “As I got older, I thought I could make a fantastic film… But when one of my parents’ friends visited, he told me that all the aged Christianites were dying. So I thought, if I want to advise the story, I have to tell it now.”

Produced by Rikke Tambo of Copenhagen-based Tambo Film, Christiania doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of the commune’s history. The film addresses the challenges posed by Pusher Street, Christiania’s notorious cannabis market, which became “Denmark’s most violent area,” according to press notes. In recent years, residents took the drastic step of dismantling Pusher Street in an attempt to displace drug dealers following a series of fatal shootings. The documentary explores this conflict, alongside the broader themes of consensus democracy, anarchic culture, and the constant tension between internal ideals and external forces.

Navigating Nuance and Public Perception

Tambo emphasizes the importance of Forchhammer’s dual perspective as both an insider and an outsider. “Everyone in Denmark knows what Christiania is and has an opinion about it,” she noted to The Hollywood Reporter. “Most likely, you love it, or you hate it.” She believes Forchhammer’s approach allows for a balanced portrayal, avoiding simplistic narratives and acknowledging the inherent contradictions within the community. This nuanced approach was also welcomed by Christiania’s residents themselves, who, according to Forchhammer, are often critical of superficial depictions of their home.

“If you told somebody that Christiania was totally perfect… they would say, ‘No, it’s not like that,’” Forchhammer explained. “If you ask a Christianite about Christiania, they will criticize it for 45 minutes, but their love for the place will arrive through.” This willingness to engage with criticism, he argues, is a key characteristic of the community and a central theme of the film.

A Democratic Experiment and its Global Resonance

Beyond its specific focus on Christiania, the film taps into broader questions about democracy, social experimentation, and the challenges of building alternative societies. Forchhammer highlights the commune’s unique governance structure, based on unanimous consensus, as a particularly compelling aspect of the story. “About 1,000 people created a parallel society 50 years ago,” he said. “It was never a 50 percent plus one vote. They all had to have a consensus to decide everything in this society.”

This emphasis on consensus-building feels particularly timely, as democratic values face challenges in many parts of the world. Forchhammer hopes the film will spark conversations about the importance of dialogue, compromise, and the ability to work with those who hold differing viewpoints. “I feel that we have a lot of democratic challenges in the world and that people have a hard time disagreeing [when it comes to] making decisions together,” he stated. “In Christiania, you have to reach an agreement with someone you really disagree with.”

The film’s relevance extends beyond political discourse. Christiania has become a significant tourist attraction in Copenhagen, second only to the Tivoli Gardens, drawing visitors from around the globe who are curious about its unique history and culture. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the film’s exploration of these dynamics adds another layer to its appeal.

CPH:DOX and Beyond

Christiania will have its world premiere in the main competition of the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (CPH:DOX) on Friday, March 13, 2026. It is also featured in the second edition of Europe Docs!, an online showcase designed to increase the visibility of European documentaries in the North American market. Verità Films is handling international sales for the project.

Following a screening for Christiania residents, which Forchhammer described as a deeply emotional experience, the filmmakers are optimistic about the film’s potential to generate dialogue and inspire reflection. Tambo shared that the screening was followed by a talk and Q&A session with local school children.

Forchhammer is already considering future projects, potentially exploring the broader themes of the Scandinavian welfare model and its current challenges. “What is really essential is that we are at the top of the happiness index,” he observed. “But that is being challenged right now. And I think it needs a film like Christiania. This needs a film where we look into what has defined us Scandinavians as people, and what’s challenging that in the future?”

As Christiania prepares for its festival debut, it stands as a compelling portrait of a unique community and a timely meditation on the enduring power – and inherent complexities – of radical idealism. Yahoo Entertainment highlights the film’s exploration of anarchy, biker gangs, drug pushers, and even an alcoholic bear, alongside the more hopeful aspects of its story.
