LOS ANGELES – Chuck Norris, the martial artist and action star who became a cultural icon through roles like Walker, Texas Ranger and his ubiquitous online persona, has died. He was 86 years ancient.

Norris passed away on March 19, 2026, his family announced on March 20, 2026. The news followed reports that he had been hospitalized in Hawaii for an undisclosed medical condition.

“To the world, he was a martial artist, actor and a symbol of strength,” the family said in a statement. “To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family.” The family requested privacy regarding the specific circumstances of his death, stating that he was surrounded by loved ones and “at peace.”

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the entertainment industry and beyond. Texas Governor Greg Abbott hailed Norris as “not only a martial arts champion, action icon, and the one and only Walker, Texas Ranger,” adding that “all of Texas mourns his passing.” Fellow action star Jean-Claude Van Damme shared his condolences, stating, “My heart and prayers are with his family. He will never be forgotten.”

Born Carlos Ray “Chuck” Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris’s path to stardom was forged through discipline and dedication. He began studying martial arts while serving in the U.S. Air Force in South Korea. After leaving the Air Force in 1962, he opened a martial arts studio in Los Angeles, quickly establishing himself as an instructor and competitor.

Norris’s foray into acting began with a small role in the 1968 Dean Martin film, The Wrecking Crew. Yet, it was his 1972 appearance alongside Bruce Lee in The Way of the Dragon that catapulted him to wider recognition. The film’s iconic fight sequence cemented Norris’s status as a formidable martial artist and action performer.

He followed this success with a string of leading roles in karate films, including Good Guys Wear Black and Silent Rage, establishing a distinct brand of all-American action that resonated with audiences. Throughout his career, Norris earned six world professional middleweight karate championships between 1968 and 1974, and achieved black belts in multiple disciplines.

While he found success in film, it was the role of Cordell Walker in the television series Walker, Texas Ranger, which premiered in 1993, that truly solidified his place in pop culture. The show ran for eight seasons, becoming a ratings hit and spawning countless action-movie jokes and internet memes. The character of Walker, a taciturn Texas Ranger dedicated to upholding justice, became synonymous with Norris’s on-screen persona.

The success of Walker, Texas Ranger represented a significant turning point in Norris’s career. He had grown up a shy and unathletic child, often daydreaming about strength and overcoming bullies. The role allowed him to embody the particularly qualities he once aspired to.

Beyond his professional achievements, Norris was a devout evangelical Christian. He was born into a family of three boys and raised primarily by his Irish mother after her divorce from their alcoholic father. He is survived by two sons from his 30-year marriage to Dianne Holechek, as well as a son and daughter with his second wife, Gena O’Kelley. He also had a daughter from an affair during his first marriage.

Norris was also known for his conservative political views. He publicly urged his fellow Americans to vote against Barack Obama in 2012 and voiced his support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2013. Netanyahu, upon hearing of Norris’s passing, described him as “a great friend of Israel and a close personal friend,” adding, “Chuck brought martial arts and the warmth of his character to millions around the world.”

In 2017, Norris recovered from two cardiac arrests. More recently, he became the public face of arms manufacturer Glock in 2019, a move that drew criticism given the ongoing debate surrounding gun violence in the United States.

Chuck Norris’s legacy extends far beyond his impressive martial arts skills and action-packed filmography. He became a cultural phenomenon, a symbol of strength, and a source of endless internet amusement. His impact on the entertainment industry and popular culture will undoubtedly be felt for generations to come.
