Dance News: February 2026 – Promotions, Awards & New Roles

Dance News: February 2026 – Promotions, Awards & New Roles

March 4, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

February proved a busy month for the dance world, with promotions, appointments, and accolades marking significant shifts across companies and organizations. From principal dancer announcements to leadership changes and lifetime achievement awards, here’s a look at the dance news you might have missed.

A New Principal at New York City Ballet

New York City Ballet saw a significant elevation within its ranks: Ryan Tomash has been promoted to Principal Dancer. The announcement came following a matinee performance on February 28th, where Tomash delivered a leading role in Jerome Robbins’ Dances at a Gathering. This promotion recognizes Tomash’s growing artistry and contributions to the company. He joined NYCB for the 2025-26 season, while simultaneously on leave from the Royal Danish Ballet, where he already holds the title of Principal Dancer. Gramilano detailed the announcement, highlighting his recent performances in key Balanchine works like Swan Lake and Tchaikovsky Suite No. 3, as well as contemporary pieces by Justin Peck and Alexei Ratmansky. Tomash also originated a featured role in Jamar Roberts’ Foreseeable Future, created for the 2025 Fall Fashion Gala.

Tomash’s journey to this point is notable. Born in Toronto, he began his training at Canada’s National Ballet School under Sergiu Stefanschi, Alexander Gorbatsevich, Raymond Smith, and Ana Jojic. He joined the Royal Danish Ballet in 2017, quickly rising through the ranks to Soloist in 2021 and Principal Dancer in 2022. NYCB’s official dancer profile confirms his extensive background and accolades, including originating the role of Romeo in Iñaki Urlezaga’s Romeo and Juliet at Teatro Argentina in 2023.

Comings and Goings in Leadership and Artistic Roles

The changes weren’t limited to dancers. Cory Stearns, a principal with American Ballet Theatre, announced his retirement at the end of the current season, with a final performance scheduled for June 27th. Meanwhile, at Works & Process, Caleb Teicher has been named artist curator in residence for a two-year term, and Aria Roach has joined the organization as an associate producer, both starting this March. These appointments signal a continued commitment to innovative programming and artistic development at Works & Process.

Dance/NYC also saw a shift in leadership, with Monica Steffey promoted to director of programming and operations. However, Grand Rapids Ballet experienced a more disruptive change, dismissing executive director Mary Jennings on January 30th. The role will be eliminated, with its responsibilities absorbed into the CEO position, currently held by interim CEO Leah Voigt. This restructuring suggests a potential shift in the organization’s operational strategy.

International Recognition and Prestigious Awards

The accolades extended beyond individual promotions. Hofesh Shechter was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture, a testament to his significant contributions to the world of dance. Bangarra Dance Theatre received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance at the Venice Biennale, with Mamela Nyamza receiving the Silver Lion. This recognition underscores Bangarra’s profound impact on contemporary dance and its commitment to Indigenous storytelling.

Several artists were also recognized with Foundation for Contemporary Arts’ 2026 Grants to Artists, each receiving $45,000 in unrestricted funding. Recipients included Maggie Cloud (Viola Farber Award), Benjamin Akio Kimitch, jaamil olawale kosoko (Robert Rauschenberg Award), Ogemdi Ude, and Anh Vo. These grants provide crucial support for artists to pursue their creative visions without financial constraints.

Shamel Pitts will receive the 2026 Jacob’s Pillow Men Dancers Award, accompanied by a $25,000 grant. Wayne McGregor is set to receive an Olivier Award for Outstanding Contribution to Dance, acknowledging his innovative choreography and influence on the field. Kayla Hamilton and Jordan Demetrius Lloyd are among the recipients of 2026–2028 Jerome@Camargo residencies, offering valuable time and space for artistic exploration.

New York State Choreographers Initiative Awards

The New York State Choreographers Initiative also announced its 2026 awardees: Mark Bankin, Sophie Bortolussi, Liv Butowsky, Jessy Crist, Maya June Dwyer, Teresa Fellion, George Mechalke, Nicki Miller, Cat D. Olson, Kaley Pruitt, Kieron Dwayne Sargeant, and Mark Schmidt. Each will receive a $2,500 stipend, mentorship access, and 20 hours of creative time, fostering the development of new choreographic operate.

Looking Ahead: Opportunities for Artists

The flurry of awards and residencies highlights a continued investment in supporting dance artists. The Jerome@Camargo residencies, for example, offer a unique opportunity for Hamilton and Lloyd to develop their work in a new environment. Similarly, the New York State Choreographers Initiative provides crucial resources for emerging and established choreographers to bring their visions to life. These initiatives, alongside the leadership changes and promotions, suggest a dynamic and evolving landscape for the dance community in the coming months.
