Daredevil: Born Again – New Blackout Suit & Bullseye’s Costume Revealed
Matt Murdock is back, and he’s sporting a fresh look. As Daredevil: Born Again prepares for its March 24th return on Disney+, fans are getting their first good look at the hero’s “blackout” suit – a sleek, all-black version of his armored costume, and, crucially, the first iteration in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature the iconic “DD” logo on the chest. The change isn’t just aesthetic; it’s a direct response to the increasingly dangerous landscape Matt Murdock now faces in New York City, and a deliberate signal to his longtime adversary, Wilson Fisk.
A Fan-Favorite Logo Finally Arrives
For Charlie Cox, who has portrayed Daredevil since the character’s initial run on Netflix, the addition of the “DD” logo is a particularly satisfying moment. “Obviously, I’ve hinted over the years that I’d love to graduate to the DDs on the chest plate,” Cox recently told IGN. He described a push-and-pull between the practicalities of wearing the suit and the emotional resonance of its design. “My costume is interesting because there’s what is so cool and such a delight and an honor to wear, and then there’s what feels good.” The actor recounted a late-night costume fitting where a glimpse of enthusiastic fans reminded him of the impact of the new design. “I walked outside and there were a ton of fans, and I could literally hear the gasp of seeing the black suit with the DDs. And suddenly I was reminded, ‘Oh, What we have is pretty cool!’”
From Red to Black: A Practical and Narrative Shift
The blackout suit’s origin story is surprisingly pragmatic. Executive producer Sana Amanat explained to IGN that the team initially considered simply spray-painting the existing red suit black, then stenciling the “DD” logo in red. “And that’s how we’re going to get the DDs out of it,” she said. “And we’re really excited about the way it came together.”
But the suit change isn’t merely a visual update. It’s deeply tied to the narrative arc of Season 2. As a refresher, the first season of Daredevil: Born Again concluded with Matt Murdock and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) forced to proceed on the run after Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) outlawed vigilantism. This shift in power dynamics necessitates a more covert approach for Daredevil. As Cox explained, “Their life is in danger. They are literally squatting above a restaurant. They only go out at night. That’s how dangerous the city of New York has become for vigilantes, and for Matt Murdock in particular. So he’s painted his red suit black. That’s the reason for it.”
A Suit That Evolves with the Story
The blackout suit isn’t static, however. Showrunner and executive producer Dario Scardapane revealed that the suit will visually reflect Matt’s journey throughout the season. “Over the course of the season … as more action takes place, the black starts to strip away and the red comes through underneath,” he said. This gradual reveal symbolizes Daredevil’s re-emergence and his continued fight against Fisk’s control. Scardapane also highlighted the symbolic weight of leaving the “DD” logo visible. “He’s leaving the DDs because he wants Fisk to know who This proves.”
This marks the first Daredevil suit uniquely designed for the MCU, distinguishing it from previous iterations seen in the Netflix series. As Cox noted, “Every other suit [we’ve done] has existed in the comics, except this is the first one that’s unique to our show.”
Bullseye’s Updated Look
Daredevil isn’t the only one receiving a costume upgrade. Wilson Bethel, reprising his role as Dex Poindexter, aka Bullseye, will also be sporting a new, comics-accurate suit in Season 2. Scardapane explained that Bullseye’s evolving character arc is reflected in his costuming choices. “For Bullseye to kind of go from legitimate FBI agent to assassin to criminal to other stuff, that was key,” he said. Amanat added that the actors are actively involved in the design process, bringing their understanding of the characters to the table. “They’ve been living those characters longer than we have,” she said.
Bethel himself has already begun brainstorming ideas for a potential Season 3 costume, sharing his wishlist with the production team, according to Scardapane. “He texted us a picture of like, ‘This is my wishlist,’” Scardapane laughed. Amanat confirmed they’ve already begun considering his suggestions.
The Broader Context: Marvel’s Post-Strike Creative Reset
The return of Daredevil: Born Again is particularly significant in the context of Marvel Studios’ broader creative strategy. Following a period of mixed reception to some of its Disney+ series, the studio is aiming to regain its footing with projects like this one. The show’s strong initial reviews, as noted by Collider, suggest a positive trajectory. The series’ success is also being closely watched as a potential indicator of fan appetite for more mature, street-level Marvel storytelling, a style that resonated strongly with audiences during the Netflix era. The show’s production was notably impacted by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, leading to a creative overhaul and reshoots, but the final product appears to have benefited from the additional development time.
The timing of the release also comes as Vincent D’Onofrio continues to garner praise for his portrayal of Wilson Fisk, a role he originally inhabited during the Netflix Daredevil series. His performance has become a defining element of the character, and his continued presence in the MCU is a major draw for fans. As USA Today reported, both Cox and D’Onofrio draw heavily on their established history with the characters when approaching their scenes together, creating a dynamic that feels both familiar and fresh.
What’s Next for the Man Without Fear?
Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again premieres on Disney+ on March 24th. Production on Season 3 has already begun, suggesting Marvel is confident in the show’s potential. Beyond Born Again, Charlie Cox is also expected to reprise his role as Daredevil in future MCU projects, including potential appearances in upcoming Spider-Man films and the Avengers: Doomsday event. The future of Bullseye, and whether Bethel’s costume wishlist will be granted, remains to be seen, but the character’s continued evolution promises to be a compelling element of the Daredevil universe.
