Disney’s Live-Action Robin Hood Reboot Is Officially Canceled
For the fans who’ve long imagined a live-action take on the classic tale, Disney has shelved its planned reboot of Robin Hood. After six years in development, the project is officially “dead,” according to Blindspotting director Carlos López Estrada, who was set to helm the film. The news arrived via a Reddit AMA, a somewhat unexpected venue for a studio course correction.
Disney initially announced plans for a “live-action” Robin Hood – a CGI-heavy remake in the vein of 2019’s The Lion King – back in 2020. Kari Granlund, who penned the 2019 Lady and the Tramp remake for Disney+, was attached to write the script and the producer of the live-action Dumbo was also on board. The lack of any casting announcements over the past six years, though, increasingly signaled trouble for the project.
A Shared Universe and Early Enthusiasm
The potential for a Robin Hood remake gained traction, in part, due to a popular fan theory connecting the 1973 animated film to 2016’s Zootopia. Co-directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore of Zootopia even acknowledged the possibility of a shared universe during an interview, suggesting that the world of Zootopia could exist within the timeline of the earlier Disney classic. DisneyTheory detailed the origins of this theory, stemming from a fan question about whether Robin Hood “actually happened” within the Zootopia universe.
This connection resonated with fans, who noted the similarities in character archetypes – Nick Wilde and Robin Hood as rebellious figures, Judy Hopps and Skippy as resourceful protagonists – and the anthropomorphic animal worlds. YouTube videos and Reddit threads explored these parallels, fueling speculation about a larger, interconnected Disney canon.
Estrada’s Vision and the Road Not Taken
López Estrada expressed disappointment at the project’s cancellation, stating he believed there was “something really special (and original!)” in his vision for the film, including “truly extraordinary music.” Even as details about his take on Robin Hood remain scarce, his comments suggest a departure from a straightforward CGI remake.
He also hinted at a potential independent path forward, suggesting he might revisit the concept with different characters. “I keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters,” he said on Reddit, playfully acknowledging the challenge of finding a legally distinct animal to fill the role of Robin Hood – a goose, perhaps, though one already appears in the original Disney film.
The Live-Action Remake Trend and Disney’s Shifting Priorities
The demise of this Robin Hood remake arrives as Disney reassesses its strategy regarding live-action adaptations. Following the massive success of The Lion King (2019), the studio greenlit a slate of similar projects, including remakes of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid. However, critical and commercial reception has been mixed, and Disney appears to be becoming more selective about which animated classics receive the live-action treatment.
The recent release of Zootopia 2, however, demonstrates Disney’s continued investment in expanding existing franchises. The success of the sequel suggests a potential shift towards prioritizing original stories and sequels over straightforward remakes, particularly within established universes like that of Zootopia.
What’s Next for Estrada?
López Estrada is currently focused on other projects. His most recent directorial effort was the Apple TV+ series Mrs. Davis, a critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller. He has also expressed interest in developing his independent take on the Robin Hood concept, though no concrete plans have been announced.
For now, the dream of a live-action Robin Hood, at least within the Disney framework, remains unfulfilled. But the enduring appeal of the legend, and the intriguing possibility of a shared universe with Zootopia, suggests that the story of the outlaw of Sherwood Forest may yet discover a new life on screen.
