Donald Glover to Voice Yoshi in Super Mario Galaxy Movie Sequel

Donald Glover to Voice Yoshi in Super Mario Galaxy Movie Sequel

March 10, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Donald Glover is heading to the Mushroom Kingdom – as the voice of Yoshi. The Emmy-winning actor and musician will lend his voice to the iconic green dinosaur in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the highly anticipated sequel to Nintendo and Illumination’s 2023 blockbuster, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The news arrived alongside the final trailer for the film, signaling a ramp-up in marketing ahead of its April 1 theatrical release.

From Atlanta to the Asteroid Belt

Glover’s casting adds another layer of star power to an already impressive voice cast. He joins Chris Pratt, who reprises his role as Mario, alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi and Jack Black, whose performance as Bowser was a standout in the first film. New additions include Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., whereas Luis Guzman will voice Wart and Issa Rae takes on the role of Honey Queen.

This isn’t Glover’s first foray into major franchise territory. He’s known for his work on television shows like Atlanta, a critically acclaimed series for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series in 2017, and Community. He also portrayed Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Beyond acting, Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, has established himself as a prolific musician and writer. His 2016 album, “Awaken, My Love!” received widespread acclaim, and he recently released Bando Stone and the New World in July 2024.

A Complicated 2024 for Glover

The casting announcement comes after a challenging year for Glover. In 2024, he was forced to cancel his world tour due to health concerns. He later revealed he had unknowingly suffered a stroke, in addition to undergoing surgery for a broken foot and a hole in his heart. Pitchfork reported on the health issues, highlighting the actor’s resilience in the face of adversity. His return to a high-profile project like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie signals a return to form for the multi-talented artist.

What to Expect from the Sequel

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie picks up after the events of the first film, with Mario, Luigi, and Peach embarking on a new adventure. This time, the trio will venture into outer space, exploring various planets – including a fiery volcano world, an underwater planet, and a neon-lit techno-land – as they confront Bowser and his son. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and produced by Nintendo and Illumination, with distribution handled by Universal Pictures.

The first Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive success, grossing over $1.36 billion worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. Variety notes that Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri announced the new cast members during a Nintendo Direct livestream, also unveiling the final trailer. The sequel aims to build on that momentum by expanding the scope of the Mario universe and introducing new characters and worlds.

Yoshi and the Potential for Musical Moments

While there are currently no plans for Glover to incorporate a rap into his portrayal of Yoshi, as he does with his musical persona Childish Gambino, the possibility remains a tantalizing prospect for fans. Glover’s musical talent is undeniable, and a Yoshi-themed rap could quickly become a viral sensation. The internet is already abuzz with speculation, with many anticipating a flood of memes and edits combining Glover’s lyrics with the iconic dinosaur character.

The Road to April 1

With the final trailer released and the cast now largely assembled, the focus shifts to post-production and marketing. The April 1 release date places The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in a competitive spring movie season, but the established fanbase and the success of the first film position it for strong box office performance. The film’s success will likely hinge on its ability to capture the magic of the Super Mario Galaxy video game, which is considered by many to be one of the greatest video games of all time.

Distribution will be handled by Universal Pictures, leveraging their extensive network of theaters and marketing resources. The studio will be hoping to replicate the success of the first film, which benefited from strong word-of-mouth and a broad appeal to both families and video game enthusiasts.

As the release date approaches, expect a continued stream of promotional materials, including character spotlights, behind-the-scenes footage, and potential tie-ins with Nintendo’s other properties. The coming weeks will undoubtedly be filled with anticipation as fans eagerly await the next chapter in the Mario cinematic universe.
