Dune 3: Trailer, Cast Updates & What We Know About Part Three

Dune 3: Trailer, Cast Updates & What We Know About Part Three

March 17, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Los Angeles, CA – The final chapter in Denis Villeneuve’s epic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune saga took a significant step closer to reality yesterday with the unveiling of the first trailer for Dune: Part Three. The premiere event, held at an AMC theater in Los Angeles on March 17, 2026, was described by Villeneuve as feeling “like a premiere” rather than a trailer launch, signaling the immense anticipation surrounding the film.

The event brought together returning stars Zendaya and Javier Bardem, alongside newcomers Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert Pattinson. While Timothée Chalamet was unable to attend in person, he introduced the footage via a video message, praising Villeneuve as a “master of cinema” and declaring the third installment a “true act of cinema.”

Dune: Part Three, based on Herbert’s Dune: Messiah, picks up the story 17 years after the events of Dune: Part Two. The trailer offers glimpses into a darker, more complex narrative, exploring the consequences of Paul Atreides’ ascension to Emperor and his attempts to break a cycle of violence. Villeneuve emphasized that the film will have a different tone and pace than its predecessors, moving from contemplation and war to a more action-packed and tense thriller.

A central thread of the narrative appears to be the evolving relationship between Paul and Chani. The trailer opens with a poignant scene of the couple discussing potential names for their future children – Leto and Ghanima – names that will resonate with fans of the source material. Zendaya, who has grown up alongside the franchise throughout her twenties, described the films as holding a “special place in her heart.” While carefully avoiding direct answers about the future of their relationship, she deferred to Villeneuve for clarification, prompting a playful response from Javier Bardem, who quipped, “I am their kid. It’s a big twist.”

The trailer also introduces Robert Pattinson as Scytale, a new antagonist whose motives remain shrouded in mystery. Pattinson, a self-proclaimed fan of Villeneuve’s Dune films, expressed his excitement at joining the cast, praising the scope and ambition of the project. He described his character as “unusual” and hinted at a moral ambiguity that sets him apart from a conventional villain.

Notably, Jason Momoa will reprise his role as Duncan Idaho, despite the character’s death in the first film. Villeneuve explained that Idaho’s return is strategically timed and will have a “tremendous impact” on Paul, offering a vital connection to his past as he grapples with his identity and power.

Villeneuve revealed that the decision to pursue a third film came after the overwhelmingly positive reception to Dune: Part Two. “We screened the movie in Mexico; there were 14,000 people outside the theater and 5,000 people inside,” he recalled. “It was that rollercoaster around the world and seeing the excitement… I felt a responsibility to finish the story.”

The production team is largely comprised of returning artisans, including composer Hans Zimmer, costume designer Jacqueline West, production designer Patrice Vermette, and editor Joe Walker. Linus Sandgren takes over cinematography duties from Greig Fraser, bringing a fresh perspective to the visual landscape of Arrakis and beyond. Villeneuve noted that filming took place on both digital and Imax film, with the latter providing an “unmatchable” visual experience.

As the film enters post-production, Villeneuve emphasized the importance of the Imax format for experiencing Dune: Part Three. “The movie is really meant to be an Imax experience and to be seen on the biggest screen as possible,” he stated. The film is currently scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.

Beyond the spectacle and action, Dune: Part Three appears to delve into the emotional core of Paul and Chani’s relationship, exploring the burdens of power and the struggle to escape a cycle of violence. Villeneuve described the film as his “most personal” to date, drawing inspiration from his deep connection to Herbert’s novel and its themes of love, loss, and the complexities of leadership.
