Ed Sheeran: Wife Cherry Seaborn’s Cancer Battle & Pregnancy Journey
Ed Sheeran has revealed his wife, Cherry Seaborn, is now doing well after undergoing treatment for a cancerous tumor discovered while she was six months pregnant with their daughter, Jupiter. The singer shared the update during a recent appearance on the Friends Maintain Secrets podcast with Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco, describing the period as “f—ing scary.”
Seaborn, now 33, received the diagnosis in February 2022. Doctors initially advised that surgery wouldn’t be possible until after the baby’s birth, leaving Sheeran and Seaborn to navigate the pregnancy with the uncertainty of what lay ahead. “The day Cherry rung me up and said that she had cancer, that was probably one of the worst days,” Sheeran recounted on the podcast.
The news came during an exceptionally difficult week for the musician. As Sheeran detailed, he was simultaneously grappling with the sudden deaths of close friends Jamal Edwards, a music entrepreneur who played a pivotal role in launching his career, and cricket legend Shane Warne. He was also involved in a legal dispute concerning his hit song, “Shape Of You.” “That was probably the worst week as Jamal died that week as well and then we went straight into the court case. And then Shane died,” he said.
Following Jupiter’s birth in May 2022, Seaborn underwent surgery to remove the tumor. Sheeran confirmed that, as of now, she is recovering well. “She’s fine, she had the operation,” he stated. “She was pregnant at the time. That’s why it was difficult. She had the operation to remove the tumor after the birth of our second child. And thankfully — touch wood — totally fine.”
The couple, who married in 2019, are also parents to a four-year-vintage daughter, Lyra. Seaborn later discussed the experience in greater detail in Sheeran’s Disney+ documentary, Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All. She described the initial shock of the diagnosis, recalling a doctor telling her, “this is really bad” and immediately calling her husband to cancel his plans while awaiting further test results.
A sequencing test on the tumor revealed it was less severe than initially feared, offering a path forward for surgical intervention after Jupiter’s arrival. Seaborn expressed immense relief at the prospect of delaying treatment until after the baby was born. “It was the most incredible news. I nearly threw up when the surgeon told us we could wait to the conclude of the pregnancy to get the tumour out,” she shared in the documentary. “We didn’t have to worry about delivering the baby early.”
The documentary also captured Seaborn’s anxiety during a follow-up scan months after the surgery. She described the emotional weight of returning to the hospital setting, recalling the fear of a potential recurrence. “Yesterday I had follow up scan in my arm to witness if the tumour had come back. We were silent in the car as we were worried it would be bad,” she said. “It was super triggering being in the same room when things weren’t so positive at the start of the year.”
Fortunately, the scan results were positive. “The surgeon looked at the scans and it all looks great. The lymph nodes have all calmed down,” Seaborn revealed. “That was amazing. It was massive for us.”
Sheeran’s openness about Seaborn’s health challenges offers a rare glimpse into the personal struggles faced by high-profile figures. While maintaining a public persona often focused on his music and performances, Sheeran’s willingness to share this deeply personal experience underscores the importance of family and the challenges of navigating serious health concerns alongside the demands of a global career. The couple’s story, as revealed through both the podcast interview and the Disney+ documentary, highlights the resilience and strength found in facing adversity together.
