Electric Avenue 2024: 90,000 Fans Flock to Christchurch Festival

Electric Avenue 2024: 90,000 Fans Flock to Christchurch Festival

March 1, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Christchurch, New Zealand – Electric Avenue, the two-day music festival held in Hagley Park, wrapped up on February 28th and March 1st, 2026, drawing an estimated 90,000 attendees. The event, a cornerstone of the New Zealand summer calendar, showcased 53 acts across five stages and represented a $20 million investment in the local economy.

Beyond the impressive numbers, this year’s Electric Avenue focused on improving the overall attendee experience. Organizers significantly expanded the festival footprint and redesigned the site layout to enhance crowd flow and reduce congestion. Wider walkways and clearer sightlines were immediately noticeable to long-time attendees, addressing previous concerns about bottlenecking during set changes.

The logistical undertaking was substantial. Approximately 300,000 “beverage units” were brought in over the weekend, alongside 350,000 reusable cups, which were washed and recirculated on-site. A $1 refund per returned cup incentivized attendees to participate in the sustainability effort. The entire setup and teardown process spanned three weeks, transforming Hagley Park into a temporary city covering 180,000 square meters – roughly the equivalent of 26 rugby fields.

The musical lineup delivered a diverse range of performances, with Friday night headlined by Split Enz. The band’s set resonated with multiple generations, proving the enduring appeal of their classic songs. As the article notes, the performance was a nostalgic experience for longtime fans and an introduction to a new audience.

Saturday’s lineup featured Australian duo Royel Otis, whose breezy indie sound provided a laid-back soundtrack for the late afternoon. Their performance encouraged dancing and created a relaxed atmosphere. Later in the day, Ocean Alley delivered a set of classics that had the crowd singing along, although Kesha drew a massive surge of attendees, packing the area in front of the stage. The energy surrounding Kesha’s performance, particularly during her rendition of “Tik Tok,” was palpable.

The festival concluded with a performance by Dom Dolla, known for his distinctive house style. His set provided a fitting end to the event, leaving attendees energized, and satisfied.

However, Electric Avenue wasn’t solely about the headlining acts. The article highlights the importance of the quieter moments – lying in the grass with friends between sets, enjoying the atmosphere, and connecting with others. These experiences contributed significantly to the overall festival vibe.

The festival’s infrastructure also played a key role in its success. Food vendors offered a variety of options, and shaded areas and seating pockets provided respite from the sun. Security and medical teams were present but unobtrusive, and transportation in and out of Hagley Park ran smoothly, demonstrating years of refinement in event management.

Electric Avenue has evolved beyond a simple music festival; it’s grow an institution in Christchurch. With record-breaking attendance, expanded infrastructure, and a continually evolving lineup, the event has firmly established itself as a highlight of the New Zealand summer. The scale of this year’s festival suggests continued growth and success in the years to come.
