Elmiene: From UK Soul to LA Sounds & Debut Album ‘Sounds for Someone’

Elmiene: From UK Soul to LA Sounds & Debut Album ‘Sounds for Someone’

March 16, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Elmiene, the 24-year-classic British R&B singer, has officially settled into Los Angeles, a move signaling a new phase in his burgeoning career. The Frankfurt-born, Oxford-raised artist is bringing his distinctly American-inflected British soul sound to the States with the release of his debut studio album, Sounds for Someone, on March 27th. This follows the success of his 2025 project, Heat The Streets, which established him as a compelling new voice in contemporary R&B.

Elmiene’s journey to this point wasn’t one of early ambition. He describes his teenage years as characterized by “minimum effort for moderate success,” prioritizing video games and comic books over focused pursuits. Music, whereas, changed that trajectory. Discovering a talent and a desire to hone it sparked a passion he hadn’t previously known. This realization came during his studies at the Arts University Bournemouth in South England, when a housemate encouraged him to share an acoustic performance online. A single viral video unexpectedly launched his musical career.

His musical influences are a carefully curated blend of legends. Elmiene cites the experimentalism of the Soulquarians, and particularly D’Angelo – whom he considers his hero – as transformative. Hearing D’Angelo’s “Lady” shifted his perception of music from background noise to a spiritual practice, with Voodoo becoming a foundational text. He also draws inspiration from Prince’s Sign o’ the Times and the songwriting precision of Babyface, forming what he calls his “creative triangle” of songwriting craft, sonic range, and emotional depth. His early song “Golden” was a key catalyst in building initial momentum. You can watch the video for “Golden” here.

From Bournemouth Viral Moment to Studio Sessions

While Elmiene quickly found his footing on stage, feeling “at home” commanding an audience, he acknowledges his performance style differs from some contemporaries. “I ain’t got that sexy shit down like Lucky Daye does,” he jokes, recognizing his own unique strengths and pockets of expression. This comfort with his own style developed through experience, though he insists instinct was always present.

The release of Heat The Streets and its deluxe version, Heat The Streets Some Mo’, further solidified his position. Much of this music was written in a single week, often in collaboration with producer Jeff Gritty, fueled by a spirit of playful emulation. The track “Useless,” born from a humorous idea about showering with clothes on, exemplifies the lightheartedness of those sessions. Elmiene notes that the project balanced British cynicism with American warmth, reflecting his evolving transatlantic identity.

The move to Los Angeles has brought new collaborations and a refined sonic palette. Raphael Saadiq, a childhood hero, produced a track on Sounds for Someone and offered guidance on longevity and well-being. Sampha contributed to “Savior,” and Salaam Remi worked on “I Want In.” Early singles “Honor” and “I Want In” offer a glimpse into the album’s emotional core. No I.D., described as “the editor,” played a crucial role in unifying the album’s sound.

A Personal Album Rooted in Grief and Reconciliation

Sounds for Someone, inspired by Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, is deeply personal, centering on Elmiene’s relationship with his father. The album explores themes of grief, regret, and reconciliation. For the first time, he allowed himself to embrace pop sensibilities without compromising his artistic vision. “That was hard to do,” Elmiene admits, explaining his previous tendency to “curve the edge” of more accessible songs with alternative production choices. However, he maintains a strict standard: a song isn’t considered finished unless it resonates powerfully with just voice and keys. VIBE.com highlights this dedication to core songwriting.

Elmiene’s definition of success has evolved. He prioritizes the freedom to continue writing and creating music, viewing that as the ultimate achievement. Above all, he values honesty in his work, believing that soul music could benefit from a greater emphasis on authenticity. Everything else, from his origins in Frankfurt to his current life in Los Angeles, feels like a bonus. Billboard reports on this shift in perspective.

With Sounds for Someone poised for release, Elmiene is focused on delivering a deeply personal and honest body of work. The album represents not just a debut, but a culmination of his journey – from a reluctant student to a confident artist reclaiming the heart of R&B, one note at a time. BET.com recently profiled Elmiene as London’s latest R&B sensation, a title he now carries into the American market.

Looking ahead, Elmiene’s immediate focus is on the album release and its reception. Beyond that, his goal remains consistent: to continue writing and creating music that resonates with authenticity and emotional depth. The next chapter will be defined by his ability to sustain this creative momentum and build a lasting career on his own terms.
