Escape with the Circus: Latvian Artists Explore the Magic of Cirque Life

Escape with the Circus: Latvian Artists Explore the Magic of Cirque Life

March 11, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Rīgas cirks is launching a new initiative aimed at younger audiences with the premiere of “Aizbēgt līdzi cirkam” (Run Away with the Circus), a performance designed to spark curiosity about the history and enduring appeal of circus arts. The show, featuring six young Latvian performers, opens March 21st as the first installment in the “Bērnu rīti” (Children’s Mornings) series, a new cycle of events dedicated to families at the Riga Circus.

The production isn’t simply about spectacle; it’s an exploration. As described by the circus, “Aizbēgt līdzi cirkam” delves into the question of why the circus continues to hold such a powerful allure, even today. The performers examine this through the lens of circus history and their own personal experiences, questioning whether the draw lies in the laughter evoked by clowns, the thrill of overcoming fear witnessed in aerial acrobatics, or the bonds of trust forged through collaborative performance.

A New Chapter for Riga Circus

This new series marks a deliberate effort by Rīgas cirks to cultivate a younger fanbase and deepen engagement with the local community. Five Saturdays throughout the year will be dedicated to children and families, offering not just performances but also interactive experiences like playful workshops and quizzes designed to introduce the magic of the circus. The launch of “Bērnu rīti” signals a broader strategy to position the circus as an educational and cultural hub for families in Riga.

The performers in “Aizbēgt līdzi cirkam” aren’t just showcasing skills; they’re posing questions. Is the appeal of the circus rooted in the joy and humor often embodied by the clown figure? Or does it stem from the courage displayed by aerialists defying gravity? Perhaps it’s the close friendships built on mutual trust and support required to execute complex stunts. The show suggests it’s all of these things and more – a space where anyone can discover a place within a larger story, even if they feel different.

Beyond the Big Top: Exploring the Circus’s Hidden Depths

Director Andris Zeļonka emphasizes the show’s focus on joy and shared experience. “Prieks vairo prieku. Citādāk nevar būt. Mēs skrienam, lecam un kāpjam. Dauzāmies un dažreiz arī sadauzāmies. Katrā no mums mīt mazs piedzīvojuma gars, kurš vēlas priecīgi ļauties nezināmajam. Izrāde Aizbēgt līdzi cirkam ir par šiem piedzīvojuma gariem,” he stated. (Translation: “Joy breeds joy. It can’t be any other way. We run, jump and climb. We bump and sometimes we bump into each other. Every one of us has a little spirit of adventure who wants to happily surrender to the unknown. The show Aizbēgt līdzi cirkam is about these spirits of adventure.”)

The production promises to showcase both the vibrant world of circus disciplines and the often-unseen dedication and perseverance required behind the scenes. It’s a reminder that every successful act is built on a foundation of courage and relentless effort. A trailer for the show is available on YouTube, offering a glimpse of the energy and artistry audiences can expect. Watch the trailer here.

More Than Just a Show: Interactive Experiences

Rīgas cirks is enhancing the experience beyond the performance itself. Before the show, attendees can participate in a free orienteering game within the circus building. Following the performance, a juggling workshop and a guided tour of the circus will be offered, providing a more immersive and educational experience for families. This commitment to interactive elements underscores the circus’s desire to foster a deeper connection with its audience.

The launch of “Aizbēgt līdzi cirkam” comes as Rīgas cirks continues to evolve as a cultural institution. Recent initiatives, as highlighted on their website, cirks.lv, include residencies for Baltic artists, collaborations with dance companies, and explorations of contemporary circus forms. The circus is also actively involved in discussions around climate change and sustainable practices within the arts.

Looking Ahead: The “Bērnu rīti” Schedule

Even as the full schedule for the “Bērnu rīti” series hasn’t been released, the inaugural performance of “Aizbēgt līdzi cirkam” on March 21st sets the stage for a year of family-friendly events. The Latvian Ministry of Culture announced the launch of the series on March 10th, according to a press release, signaling government support for the initiative. Further details regarding upcoming performances and workshops are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The Riga Circus is clearly aiming to establish itself as a cornerstone of family entertainment and artistic exploration in Latvia.
