Extraction 3: Filming Date, Idris Elba & Plot Details Revealed

Extraction 3: Filming Date, Idris Elba & Plot Details Revealed

March 10, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Chris Hemsworth is gearing up to return as Tyler Rake, and fans won’t have to wait much longer. Production on Extraction 3, the highly anticipated sequel to Netflix’s record-breaking action thrillers, is officially slated to initiate this June. After a three-year wait since Extraction 2 captivated audiences, the franchise is expanding, and the next chapter promises to deliver even more intense action.

According to production listings reported by What’s On Netflix, principal photography for Extraction 3 will commence in June 2026, with filming expected to continue through October 9th, 2026. Whereas production schedules are always subject to change, this timeline aligns with industry whispers that a return to filming was imminent. The news arrives as a welcome update for fans who’ve been eager for details since the project was first announced at Netflix’s Tudum event in 2023.

A Homecoming for the Franchise

What sets this installment apart is its location. For the first time, Extraction will film in Chris Hemsworth’s home country of Australia, specifically in Sydney. The second film was originally planned to shoot in Sydney as well, but logistical challenges stemming from COVID-19 lockdowns forced a relocation to Prague, and Vienna. Director Sam Hargrave and Hemsworth have been aiming for an Australian-based production since 2021, hoping to leverage the country’s diverse landscapes for a fresh aesthetic. The first Extraction utilized the bustling streets of India and Thailand, while the sequel leaned into a snowy, industrial feel. Australia promises a new visual palette for the series.

Beyond Australia, filming is also expected to take place in Europe during the summer months, though specific locations haven’t been confirmed. This international scope continues the franchise’s tradition of globe-trotting action sequences.

Expanding the Extraction Universe

The Extraction franchise isn’t just limited to the main films anymore. Netflix is actively building out the universe with spin-off projects. An eight-episode series, Mercenary, has been officially greenlit, further exploring the world of black ops and high-stakes missions. A spin-off film titled Tygo is also in development, signaling Netflix’s commitment to expanding the brand. You can discover more details about the expanding universe on What’s On Netflix.

The Return of Alcott and a Teased Partnership

Fans of Idris Elba will be pleased to hear that he’s set to reprise his role as Alcott/The Man in the Suit. His character was introduced in Extraction 2, and Joe Russo, one of the film’s writers, has hinted at a deeper exploration of the dynamic between Alcott and Tyler Rake in the upcoming sequel. “If you like that relationship between Idris and Chris [Hemsworth], you’re gonna enjoy Extraction 3,” Russo teased at New York Comic Con.

The ending of Extraction 2 saw Alcott offering Rake and his partner a way out of prison in exchange for undertaking missions for his mysterious boss, setting the stage for a potentially complex storyline in the third film. Elba himself has spoken about “unfinished business” with Rake’s character, suggesting Alcott’s role will be significant.

A Proven Track Record

The Extraction films have been a major success for Netflix. The original, released in April 2020, became the most-watched original film on the streaming service at the time. Extraction 2, released in 2023, continued the momentum, becoming the tenth most popular English-language movie with 129.3 million views. The films’ popularity is a testament to their visceral action sequences, compelling characters, and Hemsworth’s charismatic performance. As reported by Yahoo Entertainment, the franchise is based on the graphic novel Ciudad.

Sam Hargrave, who directed the first two installments, will once again helm Extraction 3. His action choreography and visual style have been key to the franchise’s success. The films consistently deliver intense, practical stunts and a gritty realism that sets them apart from other action blockbusters.

What’s Next for Tyler Rake?

While a release window for Extraction 3 hasn’t been announced, given the June-October 2026 production schedule, a late 2027 or early 2028 release seems plausible. Netflix will likely aim for a similar release strategy as the previous films, prioritizing a high-profile launch to maximize viewership. The development of Mercenary and Tygo suggests that Netflix is thinking long-term about the Extraction universe, and fans can expect further expansions of the franchise in the years to come. The focus now shifts to Sydney, as Hemsworth and Hargrave prepare to bring the next chapter of Tyler Rake’s story to life.
