Freya JKT48 AI Photo Editing: Clarification Postponed, Police Investigate Accounts

March 12, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Jakarta – A scheduled clarification session with Raden Rara Freyanasifa Jayawardana, known as Freya JKT48, regarding her report of AI-manipulated images has been postponed. The session, initially planned for today, was requested to be rescheduled by Freya herself, according to authorities.

“It’s been postponed, at the request of the individual for a new schedule,” stated AKBP Iskandarsyah, Head of Criminal Investigation at the South Jakarta Police, when contacted Thursday (March 12, 2026). He has not yet confirmed when Freya will be available for questioning.

The postponement comes as police continue their investigation into the alleged misuse of Grok AI to create inappropriate edits of Freya’s photos. The initial report, filed on February 5, 2025, alleges manipulation of data through electronic media, falling under Article 35 in conjunction with Article 51 of Indonesia’s updated Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE) – Law Number 1 of 2024. IDN Times reports that the investigation centers on posts from accounts identified as @grok and @swap.

The Initial Complaint and Legal Framework

Freya JKT48’s complaint centers on the unauthorized alteration of her images using artificial intelligence, specifically the Grok AI platform. The manipulated images reportedly depicted her in compromising situations, causing her significant distress. The case highlights a growing concern surrounding the potential for misuse of AI technology, particularly in the realm of image manipulation and the violation of personal privacy. The legal basis for the complaint rests on the revised UU ITE, which aims to address the evolving challenges posed by digital technologies.

As reported by DetikNews, the initial police report (LP/B/519/II/2026/SPKT/POLRES METRO JAKSEL/POLDA METRO JAYA) details the alleged offenses. Police are currently investigating the individuals responsible for the manipulated images.

JKT48 and Freya Jayawardana: A Rising Star

Raden Rara Freyanasifa Jayawardana, better known as Freya JKT48, is a prominent member of the Indonesian idol group JKT48. The group, a sister project of the renowned Japanese idol group AKB48, has cultivated a massive following in Indonesia since its formation in 2011. Freya currently serves as the captain of JKT48, a testament to her leadership and popularity within the group. Beritasatu notes that Freya first noticed the concerning posts on social media, prompting her to grab legal action.

JKT48 operates under a system where members are often subject to intense public scrutiny, making them vulnerable to online harassment and exploitation. Freya’s decision to report the incident underscores the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of public figures in the digital age. The case also raises broader questions about the responsibility of AI developers and social media platforms in preventing the misuse of their technologies.

The Broader Implications of AI-Generated Manipulation

This incident involving Freya JKT48 is not isolated. The increasing sophistication of AI-powered image and video manipulation tools has led to a surge in “deepfakes” and other forms of digital deception. These technologies pose a significant threat to individuals and society as a whole, potentially eroding trust in media and institutions. The case highlights the urgent need for legal frameworks and technological solutions to combat the spread of AI-generated misinformation.

The use of AI to create non-consensual intimate images is a particularly concerning trend. Such images can cause severe emotional distress and reputational damage to victims. The Indonesian government has been grappling with how to regulate AI technologies whereas fostering innovation. The revised UU ITE represents an attempt to strike a balance between these competing interests.

Ongoing Investigation and Next Steps

Currently, the South Jakarta Police are focused on identifying the anonymous accounts responsible for the manipulated images. AKBP Iskandarsyah stated that the investigation is ongoing, but did not disclose the number of accounts currently under scrutiny. The police plan to question Freya further once a new date is confirmed.

The investigation will likely involve tracing the origins of the manipulated images, identifying the individuals behind the anonymous accounts, and gathering evidence to support the prosecution. The outcome of the case could set a precedent for future cases involving AI-generated manipulation and online harassment in Indonesia.

As the investigation unfolds, the focus will be on establishing the extent of the damage caused to Freya JKT48 and holding the perpetrators accountable for their actions. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with AI technology and the importance of safeguarding individual rights in the digital realm.
