The South African gospel music scene is adjusting to a significant shift as Jumbo Nyangiwe and Lungelo Hlongwane, a previously celebrated duo, are now pursuing separate musical endeavors. What began as a promising partnership in has unexpectedly dissolved, leaving fans questioning the future of their collaboration.
The pair initially gained attention for their dynamic performances, with Lungelo frequently joining Jumbo on stage. Lungelo, 26, addressed the situation, emphasizing that his decision to pursue a solo career was a personal one, not stemming from conflict with Jumbo. “It’s not like we had a fight or something bad but I’m the one who decided to withdraw and work my way,” he stated. He explained that his absence from the birthday celebration was due to prior commitments.
Imvula, Lungelo’s new EP, reflects his current circumstances. He described the songs as a way of entrusting his situation to God, drawing parallels to his previous hit, “Qhubeka,” which he also composed during a challenging period. “The song is like my hit song titled Qhubeka since I also composed it when I was facing difficulties in my life and God remembered me. Even now, I know that God will remember me in these difficulties,” he said. He hopes the EP will bring blessings and open new doors for his career, acknowledging a future album is planned but will be released when the time is right.
Sources close to the artists suggest the split occurred during the recording of a full album. According to these sources, after Jumbo provided financial support for Lungelo’s Sizobonga EP, they began working on a collaborative album. However, the project was abandoned when the duo decided to go their separate ways. The source stated, “Jumbo rescued Lungelo in when his music career was fading after releasing his hit song titled Qhubeka.”
Jumbo has also moved forward with his own plans. He recently held a successful show at The Playhouse on , inviting musicians he has previously collaborated with – with the notable exception of Lungelo. He is now planning to expand the show to a larger venue, the ICC in Durban.
