Hello! Music Lab: New Show Explores the Magic of Hello! Project Songs

March 23, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

A deep dive into the songbooks of Hello! Project is coming to Japanese television this April. Hello! Music Lab., a new program focusing on the history and artistry behind the popular idol group’s extensive catalog, will premiere on TV Tokyo on April 6th at 1:00 AM JST, with a BS TV Tokyo premiere following on April 12th at 1:00 AM JST. The show promises a unique blend of musical analysis, performance, and behind-the-scenes insights, offering both longtime fans and newcomers a fresh perspective on the group’s enduring appeal.

A Legacy of Performance and Songcraft

Hello! Project, now entering its 28th year, has develop into a cornerstone of the Japanese idol landscape. The franchise, encompassing groups like Morning Musume.’26, Angerme, Juice=Juice, and more – a total of seven groups including BEYOOOOONDS, OCHA NORMA, and Rozy Chronicle – consistently delivers energetic performances and catchy tunes. The new program aims to unpack what makes these songs so compelling, focusing on the “unique and astonishing” performances and the songs themselves, elements central to the group’s enduring popularity.

The show’s format is designed to be both informative and engaging. Each episode will center around a single song, exploring its creation through interviews with songwriters, composers, choreographers, and the performing members themselves. Listeners will learn about the lyrical inspiration, melodic construction, and the evolution of the choreography. This detailed examination will then culminate in a studio performance, with camera angles chosen by the performers to highlight key moments and nuances.

Labolun and a Rotating Cast of Hosts

Adding a playful element to the proceedings is Labolun, an original character who will serve as the show’s MC. The voice of Labolun will rotate monthly, beginning with comedian Yoshizumi in April and followed by comedian and actress Tomoe Tabe (of the comedy duo Borusoku) in May. The show will as well feature narration by Makoto Nishiyama.

Beyond the Broadcast: Accessibility and Engagement

Hello! Music Lab. isn’t limited to traditional television broadcasts. Episodes will be available for streaming on platforms like TVer, Tele東HP (Netemo Tere東), and Lemino, ensuring wider accessibility for viewers. TVer, in particular, offers a convenient way to catch up on missed episodes. The program’s official X (@hellolab_tx) and TikTok (@hellolab_tx) accounts will provide additional content and updates, fostering a direct connection with fans.

Industry Momentum and a Renewed Focus on Music

The launch of Hello! Music Lab. arrives at a moment of heightened interest in Hello! Project. Producer Hideaki Takaiwa notes a surge in fan engagement, fueled by the group’s 30th-anniversary celebrations, the availability of their music on subscription streaming services, and the viral success of Juice=Juice’s “Sore! Mi Amore.” As Natalie.mu reports, Takaiwa expressed a desire to delve deeper into the “charm and power” of each song, particularly now that they are readily accessible to a wider audience. He describes the show as “a slightly academic music program” with a “100% Hello! Pro concentration.”

Morning Musume.’26 Leader Anticipates Deeper Fan Connection

The sentiment is shared by members of the groups themselves. Nozomi Kinoshita, leader of Morning Musume.’26, expressed her excitement about the opportunity to explore the nuances of Hello! Project’s music. “Through ‘Hello! Music Lab.’, I am exceptionally happy to be able to deliver in depth about one of the charms of Hello! Project, ‘songs’,” Kinoshita said. “I think it is a program where you can touch the charm of Hello! Project songs more than ever through talk and studio singing, and learn about the background of the song and the highlights of the dance.” She added that the recording process was enjoyable and that she hopes the show will allow fans to rediscover the “interestingness and depth” of Hello! Project’s music.

What’s Next for Hello! Project and Hello! Music Lab.?

The initial broadcast schedule confirms weekly episodes on TV Tokyo on Mondays and BS TV Tokyo on Sundays. Beyond that, the program’s long-term trajectory will likely depend on audience reception and the availability of content. Given the vast Hello! Project catalog, there’s ample material for future episodes. The rotating MC format with Labolun also introduces an element of unpredictability and potential for guest appearances, keeping the show fresh and engaging. The success of Hello! Music Lab. could also influence future programming decisions within Hello! Project, potentially leading to more in-depth explorations of their musical legacy.
