Holden FE: What Decade Was This Car Model Produced?

March 18, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The North London rivalry just got a significant injection of talent, and a hefty dose of transfer drama. Arsenal have completed the signing of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace, reportedly for a fee of up to £67.5 million, in a move that saw them successfully hijack a deal previously agreed with Tottenham Hotspur. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder joins Mikel Arteta’s squad as the club aims to end a 22-year wait for a Premier League title.

The transfer, confirmed on Saturday March 18, 2026, marks a coup for Arsenal, who have seemingly outmaneuvered their local rivals in a manner reminiscent of Sol Campbell’s controversial move from Tottenham to the Gunners in 2001. While the symbolic victory over Spurs will undoubtedly be savored by Arsenal fans, Arteta’s motivation appears to be purely strategic. According to reports, the manager isn’t focused on one-upmanship, but rather on securing the final piece of the puzzle needed to propel Arsenal to championship contention.

Eze’s arrival at the Emirates Stadium comes at a time when Arsenal’s attacking options are already plentiful. The squad boasts established stars like Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Bukayo Saka, and Noni Madueke, with 15-year-old Max Dowman recently integrated into the senior team. The addition of Eze, raises questions about Arteta’s long-term vision for the forward line. Yet, a key factor influencing the decision appears to be the recent knee injury sustained by Kai Havertz.

The injury to Havertz, which could sideline the German for an extended period, seems to have prompted Arsenal to prioritize squad depth. The club’s experience during the 2024/25 season, when injuries to key players like Gabriel Jesus and Saka forced midfielder Mikel Merino to play out of position up front, reportedly served as a wake-up call. Arteta evidently determined that relying on adaptable players wasn’t a sustainable strategy, and that investing in a high-quality replacement was essential.

Eze’s versatility is a significant asset. He is capable of playing as a “false nine,” on the left wing, or, most likely, as the left-sided number eight – a role Havertz was originally signed to fill. This tactical flexibility will provide Arteta with valuable options and allow him to adjust his approach based on the opponent and the game situation.

The player’s journey to this point has been marked by consistent development. Eze began his career in the academies of several English clubs, including Arsenal, Fulham, Reading, and Millwall, before making his senior debut with Queens Park Rangers in 2016. His breakthrough season came in 2019-20, where he scored 14 goals and was named QPR’s Player of the Year, earning him a move to Crystal Palace for £17 million.

During his time at Crystal Palace, Eze established himself as a key player, making over 150 appearances and culminating in a memorable moment: scoring the winning goal in the 2025 FA Cup final, securing the club’s first major trophy. He followed that success by winning the 2025 FA Community Shield with Palace before ultimately attracting the attention of Arsenal.

Eze’s international career is also progressing. He has represented England at various youth levels, including the U20s and U21s, and made his senior debut in 2023. He was also part of the England squad that finished as runners-up to Spain at UEFA Euro 2024.

While the financial outlay of £67.5 million is substantial, Arsenal clearly believe that Eze’s talent and potential justify the investment. The signing signals a clear statement of intent from the club, demonstrating their ambition to compete for the Premier League title and establish themselves as a dominant force in English football. The fact that Eze is a boyhood Arsenal fan, and was previously open to joining the club, adds another layer of appeal to the transfer.

Tottenham, meanwhile, will be left to regroup and pursue alternative targets. The loss of Eze represents a setback for Thomas Frank’s side, particularly after they had reached an agreement with both Palace and the player himself. The club will now need to refocus their efforts and identify other players who can strengthen their squad.

For Arsenal, the focus now shifts to integrating Eze into the team and preparing for the challenges ahead. With a talented squad and a determined manager, the Gunners will be hoping that Eze’s arrival will be the catalyst for a successful season.
