India Semaglutide: Patent Expiry to Fuel Generic Market Growth

India Semaglutide: Patent Expiry to Fuel Generic Market Growth

March 18, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The global fight against obesity may be on the verge of a significant shift, thanks to a coming wave of affordable weight-loss medication from India. With the patent for semaglutide – the active ingredient in popular drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy – expiring in India on March 20th, nearly 50 generic brands are poised to enter the market, potentially slashing costs and expanding access to a treatment previously out of reach for many.

A Generics Gold Rush

For years, Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy have dominated the conversation around semaglutide, initially prescribed for type 2 diabetes but quickly gaining traction as a weight-loss aid. However, the high price tag – ranging from roughly $8,800 to $16,400 per month depending on dosage – has limited its accessibility. That’s about to change. Indian pharmaceutical companies, including Dr. Reddy’s, Zydus, Sun Pharmaceuticals, Cipla, and Lupin, are gearing up to launch their versions of the drug. Experts predict the monthly cost could fall to between Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,000 (approximately $36 to $48 USD), and some estimates suggest it could be even lower, around ₹5,000 (approximately $60 USD) for a weekly dose. Hindustan Times reports that this represents at least a 50% reduction in price.

Beyond Ozempic and Wegovy: The ‘Generic’ Landscape

The impending arrival of these generics is already being dubbed the “generic Ozempic” and “generic Wegovy” moment, though it’s important to note these aren’t simply copies. Generics must meet the same standards for dosage, safety, strength, quality, and performance as the brand-name drugs, but without the expense of repeating costly clinical trials. This difference is key to the price reduction. The Indian market is uniquely positioned to capitalize on this shift. NDTV highlights that over 50 branded generic versions are expected to flood the Indian market.

India: A Test Case for Global Access

India is the first major country after Canada where Novo Nordisk is losing patent protection on semaglutide. This makes it a crucial test case for how dramatically the prices of these anti-obesity drugs can fall globally. With a large population burdened by diabetes and a well-established generic pharmaceutical industry, India is uniquely suited to drive down costs and increase access. The potential impact extends far beyond India’s borders. If the Indian model proves successful, it could pave the way for similar price reductions in other countries, making semaglutide accessible to millions more people worldwide.

Why Semaglutide Became a Sensation

Semaglutide’s popularity stems from its mechanism of action. The drug mimics the GLP-1 hormone, which is naturally released in the gut after eating. This hormone stimulates insulin production, lowers blood sugar, slows digestion, and crucially, reduces appetite. This combination of effects makes it a powerful tool for both managing type 2 diabetes and promoting weight loss. The drug’s effectiveness has fueled a significant demand, particularly in the West, where it has become a cultural phenomenon, often discussed on social media and embraced by celebrities. The Indian Express notes that the weight loss drug boom seen in Western countries is now expected to gain momentum in India with the arrival of generics.

Novo Nordisk’s Response and Market Dynamics

Despite the looming competition, Novo Nordisk isn’t lowering the price of its branded drugs. The company maintains that demand is driven by patient trust, not simply patent protection. This strategy suggests Novo Nordisk is banking on its established brand reputation and the perceived value of its products to retain a segment of the market. However, the sheer volume of generics entering the market is likely to exert significant downward pressure on prices, even for the original manufacturer. The competition will be fierce, with major Indian pharmaceutical players vying for market share.

Expanding Healthcare Services in Anticipation

The anticipated surge in demand has already prompted healthcare providers in India to prepare. Hospitals, telehealth firms, and clinics are expanding their obesity-focused services to accommodate the expected influx of patients seeking semaglutide treatment. Swati Pradhan, a Mumbai-based physician, anticipates a doubling of her obesity patient load, according to reporting from Hindustan Times.

What’s next for semaglutide access? The coming weeks will be critical as the first generic versions of semaglutide become available in India. Monitoring pricing trends and assessing the impact on patient access will be key to understanding the long-term implications of this patent expiration. The Indian experience will undoubtedly be closely watched by healthcare systems and pharmaceutical companies around the world, as it could offer a blueprint for making these life-changing medications more affordable and accessible globally.
