Jennifer Lopez: Rom-Com Queen & Latina Representation in Film

Jennifer Lopez: Rom-Com Queen & Latina Representation in Film

March 26, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Jennifer Lopez isn’t just a singer, dancer, and actress; she’s quietly built a legacy as a rom-com mainstay, and arguably, the first Latina actor to truly claim the genre as her own. For over two decades, Lopez has consistently delivered romantic comedies, often defying critics and box office expectations, and, crucially, creating opportunities for Latina representation in a space historically lacking it. Her continued success, even amidst projects like the recently released musical film What we have is Me… Now: A Love Story, solidifies her position as a rom-com queen.

Early Doubts, Enduring Appeal

Lopez’s journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. Early films like 2002’s Maid in Manhattan faced criticism for perpetuating stereotypes, and 2003’s Gigli, co-starring Ben Affleck, was famously panned. Yet, she persevered. The 2005 hit Monster-in-Law, alongside Jane Fonda, proved a turning point, becoming one of her highest-grossing films to date. This resilience mirrors her broader career, navigating both critical scrutiny and public fascination with her personal life.

Lopez’s ability to blend comedic timing with vulnerability has been key to her success. She’s become, in many ways, the 2000s equivalent of Meg Ryan, a star who consistently delivers relatable and charming performances in the romantic comedy space. From 2001’s The Wedding Planner, which grossed $94 million worldwide, to 2004’s Shall We Dance? ($170 million at the box office) and 2022’s Marry Me ($50 million), Lopez has consistently drawn audiences to her films.

Building Nuyorican Productions

Lopez’s commitment to the genre extends beyond acting. She founded Nuyorican Productions in 2001, alongside Benny Medina, a production company that reflects her Puerto Rican heritage and New York upbringing. The name itself, a portmanteau of “New York” and “Puerto Rican,” speaks to her desire to represent her background in her work. Nuyorican Productions has allowed Lopez to take control of her narrative and champion projects that resonate with her values. She currently serves as Principal of the company, with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas as President and Natalie Haack Flores as Vice President of Development.

While Lopez initially split with Medina shortly after the company’s founding, Nuyorican Productions continued to grow, partnering with HBO in 2003 to create a documentary about Los Quinces, a traditional Cuban celebration. The company also produced the UPN series South Beach in 2006, though it faced low ratings and ultimately wasn’t renewed when UPN merged with The CW.

A Billion-Dollar Rom-Com Legacy

Despite the ups and downs, Lopez has amassed approximately $1 billion in gross revenue for her rom-com films. This financial success is particularly significant given the historical lack of representation for Latina actors in leading roles. A 2019 report by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative revealed that only seven percent of films featured a lead or co-lead Hispanic/Latino actor. Lopez, in effect, has been actively carving out space for herself and future generations of Latina performers.

Her recent projects demonstrate this continued commitment. This Is Me… Now, despite mixed reviews, allowed Lopez to explore her love life on her own terms, a departure from the often-sensationalized media coverage she’s received. The film, which cost Lopez $20 million to produce, features choreography, cameos, and costumes, and includes comedic elements with longtime friend Fat Joe playing her therapist.

Beyond the Traditional Rom-Com

Lopez isn’t limiting herself to traditional rom-com tropes. She’s actively expanding the boundaries of the genre, taking on roles that challenge expectations. As noted in PopSugar, she’s equally comfortable wielding guns and combat boots in action-oriented roles like 2022’s Shotgun Wedding as she is navigating the complexities of a mother-in-law in a more conventional romantic comedy.

What’s Next for J.Lo?

Lopez is currently filming Office Romance, alongside Brett Goldstein, with her Nuyorican Films production company taking a producing role. Filming took place in New Jersey earlier this year, and the project is generating local buzz. Beyond this, Lopez continues to balance her acting career with her music and business ventures, demonstrating a remarkable ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously. Her continued presence in the rom-com space, both in front of and behind the camera, ensures that she will remain a significant force in the genre for years to arrive.
