KPop Demon Hunters 2: Netflix Sequel Announced – Details & Updates

KPop Demon Hunters 2: Netflix Sequel Announced – Details & Updates

March 13, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The world of HUNTR/X is expanding. Netflix has officially greenlit a sequel to the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters, confirming that directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to helm the follow-up. The original film, which debuted on Netflix in June 2025, quickly became a global phenomenon, reaching over 500 million views and earning a Grammy Award for its breakout song, “Golden.”

The news, announced March 12, 2026, comes as the film is nominated for two Oscars this weekend, further cementing its place in pop culture history. KPop Demon Hunters follows the story of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, members of the chart-topping K-pop group HUNTR/X, who lead a double life as demon hunters, protecting the world from supernatural threats. The first film pitted them against the Saja Boys, a rival boy band revealed to be demons in disguise.

A Sequel Driven by Fan Demand

The decision to move forward with a sequel isn’t entirely surprising. As Kang told USA Today in October, “I think the fans are, at this point, demanding it.” That demand appears to have been heard. Kang expressed immense pride in the project, stating, “I perceive immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

The success of KPop Demon Hunters extends beyond viewership numbers. HUNTR/X, the virtual K-pop group at the heart of the story, achieved real-world success with their music. The group became the first K-pop girl group to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, and “Golden” made history as the first K-pop song to win a Grammy. Netflix’s Tudum blog highlights this unprecedented achievement, underscoring the film’s cultural impact.

Kang and Appelhans: A Novel Partnership

The sequel will be the first project to emerge from a newly inked multiyear writing and directing partnership between Netflix and Kang and Appelhans. This signals a significant investment by the streaming giant in the creative duo and their vision for expanding the KPop Demon Hunters universe. Appelhans echoed Kang’s enthusiasm, saying, “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve – and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”

The Voices Behind HUNTR/X

The original film featured a talented voice cast, including Arden Cho as Rumi, May Hong as Mira, and Ji-young Yoo as Zoey. The singing voices were provided by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, who have also expressed eagerness to collaborate on more music for the sequel. Speaking after “Golden” won Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards in January, EJAE confirmed that the trio “definitely” wants to make more music together, hinting at the potential for a soundtrack as captivating as the first film’s. Digital Spy notes the film is currently Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time.

What We Don’t Know Yet

While the announcement confirms the sequel’s development and the return of the directing team, many details remain under wraps. A release date has not been announced, and the plot specifics are being kept tightly under control. It’s unclear whether the original voice cast will reprise their roles, though their expressed enthusiasm suggests a strong possibility. The involvement of the Saja Boys, and whether new supernatural threats will emerge, also remains to be seen.

The Future of the Franchise

The success of KPop Demon Hunters demonstrates the growing global appetite for Korean-driven stories and the power of blending music, animation, and action. The sequel has the potential to build on this momentum, further solidifying the franchise’s position as a major player in the entertainment landscape. The multiyear partnership between Netflix and Kang and Appelhans suggests that the streaming service is committed to exploring the world of KPop Demon Hunters for years to come.

As for next steps, Netflix has not yet provided a timeline for production or release. However, given the film’s complex animation and musical elements, a substantial production period is likely. Fans can expect further updates as the project progresses, but for now, the excitement surrounding the sequel is building, promising a thrilling continuation of the HUNTR/X story.
