Kristi Noem’s DHS Tenure: A ‘Catastrophe’ and What Led to Her Firing

Kristi Noem’s DHS Tenure: A ‘Catastrophe’ and What Led to Her Firing

March 9, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The tenure of Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security ended abruptly this week, a move widely seen as a long-overdue reckoning for a period marked by controversy and, according to many observers, outright mismanagement. President Donald Trump’s decision to fire Noem, announced Thursday, culminates months of criticism surrounding her leadership of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), particularly regarding immigration enforcement and disaster response. Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin has been nominated as her replacement.

A Tumultuous Tenure

Noem’s dismissal wasn’t a surprise to many following the unfolding events. As Fox News reported, the firing was “way too long” in coming, liberating Republicans to acknowledge concerns that had been voiced by Democrats, media outlets, and outside critics for some time. The core of the issue, as detailed in multiple reports, was a perceived lack of experience in national security matters combined with a series of questionable decisions and public relations missteps.

The criticism extended beyond policy. Noem’s memoir sparked outrage when she revealed shooting her family dog, a detail that drew widespread condemnation. More seriously, she faced accusations of mishandling the deaths of individuals involved in ICE operations, reportedly dismissing them as “domestic terrorists” and refusing to offer condolences or initiate investigations. This incident, along with aggressive ICE tactics in Minneapolis, fueled public backlash and raised questions about the agency’s accountability.

The Advertising Contract Debacle

The final straw, however, appears to have been a contentious $220 million advertising contract. Noem claimed President Trump had approved the deal, which would have prominently featured her. However, Senator John Kennedy reportedly received a phone call from Trump himself, disputing Noem’s account. This discrepancy proved fatal to her position. The contract itself raised red flags, awarded to a newly formed Delaware company with no prior government experience and a direct connection to Noem’s 2022 gubernatorial campaign, as detailed by Fox News.

From South Dakota to National Stage

Kristi Noem’s path to the national stage began in South Dakota, where she served as the state’s governor from 2019 to 2026. Prior to that, she served as the state’s Lieutenant Governor from 2011 to 2019 and in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011. Her political career has been characterized by a conservative stance and a focus on issues like limited government and individual liberty. She gained national attention as a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, frequently appearing at his rallies and advocating for his policies. Her selection as Homeland Security Secretary was seen by some as a reward for her loyalty, but also as a controversial choice given her lack of experience in the field.

The “Shield of the Americas” Role

Despite the abrupt firing, Noem hasn’t entirely disappeared from the administration. Just two days after being dismissed as DHS Secretary, she appeared alongside President Trump at the “Shield of the Americas” summit in Miami, Florida, in a newly created role as special envoy to the initiative. The Independent reports that at the summit, Noem repeatedly praised Trump’s leadership and encouraged Latin American nations to take military action against drug cartels. This move, although seemingly a consolation prize, has been viewed by some as a further demonstration of Trump’s willingness to reward loyalty even in the face of controversy.

Impact on DHS and Immigration Policy

Noem’s departure leaves a significant void at the Department of Homeland Security, particularly as the nation grapples with ongoing challenges related to border security and immigration. Her replacement, Senator Markwayne Mullin, is expected to take a more aggressive approach to deportation. Mullin, a Republican from Oklahoma, has a background in business and has served in the Senate since 2023. He has consistently advocated for stricter border enforcement and has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration’s immigration policies. His appointment signals a potential shift in DHS priorities, with a greater emphasis on enforcement and a possible rollback of some of the more lenient policies implemented under previous administrations.

What Comes Next: Mullin’s Confirmation and DHS Priorities

The immediate next step is Senator Mullin’s confirmation by the Senate. While he is expected to face some opposition from Democrats, his experience and relatively moderate reputation within the Republican party suggest he has a good chance of being confirmed. Once confirmed, Mullin will inherit a department facing numerous challenges, including a backlog of asylum cases, ongoing concerns about border security, and the need to improve coordination with international partners. He will also need to address the lingering fallout from Noem’s tenure, including rebuilding trust with stakeholders and restoring morale within the agency. The confirmation process itself will likely be a focal point, with lawmakers scrutinizing Mullin’s views on immigration and border security. The timeline for confirmation remains uncertain, but it is expected to be completed within the next few weeks.
