Kristoffer Hivju: New Crime Series & Local Pride in Norway

Kristoffer Hivju: New Crime Series & Local Pride in Norway

March 21, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The minor town of Sogn, Norway is serving as the backdrop for a novel Norwegian crime series, “Mord i Sogn” (translated as “Murder in Sogn”), and anticipation is building as the show premieres. The series, starring Kristofer Hivju, Eili Harboe, and Cecilie Svendsen, is already being described as a refreshing take on the Nordic noir genre, leaning into a more human and locally-rooted narrative.

A Cozy Crime in the Fjords

“Mord i Sogn” distinguishes itself from the often-grim landscape of Nordic crime dramas. As described in a review from VG, the series is being dubbed a “kosekrim” – a “cozy crime” – focusing on lighter mysteries set in idyllic locations with less emphasis on graphic violence. This approach is similar to British series like “The Marlowe Murder Club” and Swedish productions like “Mordene i Sandhamn,” where the setting is as integral to the story as the mystery itself. While “Sandhamn” evokes summer and sunshine, “Mord i Sogn” offers the dramatic beauty of the Norwegian fjords and mountains.

The series follows Ole Vik (Kristofer Hivju), the chief of Sogn police station – a fictional station described as the smallest in Norway – and Cecilie Hopen (Eili Harboe), a police student thrust into a suspicious death investigation. Hivju, known internationally for his role as Tormund Giantsbane in “Game of Thrones,” portrays Vik as more of a social worker than a traditional police officer, deeply connected to the 5000 residents of the small community. According to Filmweb, Hivju described his character as someone who “knows all the 5000 inhabitants in the village.” The role also involved a generous amount of local cider, he added.

From Books to Screen

“Mord i Sogn” is based on the books by Jørgen Jæger, and the adaptation has been a long-awaited project for the author. Jæger’s characters and stories have been ripe for adaptation, and the series is being helmed by Kristoffer Metcalfe, who also serves as a series creator and director. The script is a collaboration between Metcalfe and Kathrine Valen Zeiner. The series premiered on TV 2 Play and TV 2 on March 19th, 2026, with four episodes released initially.

Hivju’s Connection to the Locale

Kristofer Hivju’s connection to the area extends beyond his role in the series. Nordstrands Blad reports that Hivju recently praised his neighborhood on Ekeberg, highlighting its appeal and the reasons people are returning to the area. This personal connection seems to resonate with his portrayal of a police officer deeply rooted in his community.

A Shift in the Nordic Noir Landscape

The series is being positioned as a departure from the darker, more dysfunctional character tropes often found in Nordic noir. Eili Harboe noted in interviews that she was drawn to the warmth of Jæger’s characters, and she believes the series’ strength lies in its blend of suspense, empathy, and compassion. This emphasis on human connection and a more grounded narrative could attract a wider audience, offering a different flavor within the popular crime genre.

Cast and Crew Details

Alongside Hivju and Harboe, the cast includes Cecilie Svendsen, Finn Tokvam, Heidi Ruud Ellingsen, Peder Lauvås, Kim Fairchild, Kyrre Haugen Sydness, Rebekka Nystadbakk, and Morten Abel. The series is produced by TV 2, and the IMDb page for Sogn Murders lists the production details and cast information.

What’s Next for “Mord i Sogn”?

Given the positive initial reception and the source material’s potential, a multi-season run seems likely. Kristofer Hivju has indicated he is prepared for “many seasons” of the show, according to Filmweb. The success of the first season will likely determine the pace of future production, but the combination of a compelling story, a talented cast, and a unique setting positions “Mord i Sogn” for continued success. TV 2 will likely assess viewership numbers and critical response to inform decisions about renewal and potential expansion of the “Mord i Sogn” universe.
