LA’s Museum Boom: New Arts Hubs to Explore Before 2028 Olympics

LA’s Museum Boom: New Arts Hubs to Explore Before 2028 Olympics

March 19, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Los Angeles is poised for a cultural boom, with a wave of new museums set to open their doors in 2026 and beyond. This year marks a particularly significant moment, as the city prepares to unveil four major arts complexes, including the highly anticipated Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The influx of cultural institutions isn’t just about adding attractions; it’s a reshaping of the city’s artistic landscape, timed perfectly with the approach of the 2028 Summer Olympics.

A New Era for L.A. Museums

The momentum is building with the imminent openings of several key institutions. This spring will spot the debut of Refik Anadol’s Dataland, a groundbreaking museum dedicated to AI-generated art and the long-awaited opening of the David Geffen Galleries at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Later in the year, Meow Wolf will bring its immersive, psychedelic art experiences to a reimagined 90s movie theater space outside Culver City. And, of course, the culmination of years of planning – George Lucas’s Lucas Museum – is slated to open in Exposition Park this September.

LACMA’s Transformation: A Concrete Vision

The $720 million David Geffen Galleries at LACMA are set to open to members in April, with a general public opening following in May. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor, the galleries are described as a “concrete sculpture,” offering 90 exhibition galleries across 110,000 square feet. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the inaugural exhibition will take a unique approach, organizing artwork by oceanic regions rather than traditional mediums or periods. LACMA Director Michael Govan envisions a space where visitors can “make your own path,” fostering a more intuitive and exploratory experience. Among the highlights will be works by Georges de La Tour, Henri Matisse, and Vincent Van Gogh.

The Lucas Museum: A Narrative Universe

After more than a decade in development, George Lucas and Mellody Hobson’s Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will finally open its doors. The museum, boasting over 10,000 square feet of gallery space, will showcase Lucas’s extensive collection, including iconic artifacts from the “Star Wars” franchise, “Peanuts” comic strips, and illustrations from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Lucas donated his collection to create the Lucas Archives, encompassing props and production art from Lucasfilm projects like the “Indiana Jones” franchise. The museum’s design, featuring a massive green roof garden by Studio-MLA, aims to integrate art, ecology, and storytelling. Landscape architect Mia Lehrer described the garden as “the fullest expression of what landscape can be,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

Meow Wolf: Immersive Storytelling

Meow Wolf’s latest installation will transform a former Cinemark movie theater in West L.A. Into an immersive art experience. Building on the success of its Las Vegas location, Omega Mart, which went viral on TikTok, the L.A. Outpost promises a “thoroughly Los Angeles tale” within its 52,000 square feet. Creative Director Shakti Howeth described the project as exploring “dreams and broken dreams,” reflecting the city’s history as a destination for artists. The Los Angeles Times reports that the exhibition will include sci-fi elements, a meditative space, and a 30-foot-tall mushroom tower, with a planned opening at the end of 2026.

Beyond the Headliners: Expanding the Cultural Landscape

The museum boom extends beyond these high-profile projects. The Armenian American Museum and Cultural Center of California, slated for completion in downtown Glendale in late 2026, will offer a dedicated space for Armenian art and history. With a $67-million budget, the museum will feature exhibitions, an auditorium, and a learning center. The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center at the California Science Center is as well undergoing a major expansion, set to house the Space Shuttle Endeavour in a launch position, making it the tallest authentic spacecraft displayed vertically in the world. The Los Angeles Times notes that the center will also include 20 planes and jets, a Boeing 747, and a mock flight deck.

The Broad’s Expansion: Meeting Demand

Responding to unexpectedly high visitor numbers, The Broad museum is adding a $100-million expansion, scheduled for completion by 2028. The new building, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, will add 70% more gallery space, two outdoor courtyards, and a live programming space. Founding Director Joanne Heyler described the expansion as creating a “conversation” with the existing building, offering a complementary visitor experience. As detailed in the Los Angeles Times, the expansion aims to accommodate the museum’s growing popularity and provide a more comprehensive showcase of its collection.

Looking Ahead: The 2028 Olympics and Beyond

The timing of these museum openings is no coincidence. The 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles are expected to draw a massive influx of visitors, and the city is eager to showcase its revitalized cultural scene. These institutions aren’t just preparing for the Olympics; they’re building for the future, aiming to establish Los Angeles as a world-class destination for art and culture. The completion of these projects will undoubtedly reshape the city’s identity and offer a wealth of new experiences for both residents and tourists alike.
