LE SSERAFIM’s Yunjin Faces Backlash Over Past “Change the Industry” Comments
A past video featuring LE SSERAFIM’s Yunjin has resurfaced, sparking significant backlash online. The controversy centers around comments she made in 2022 expressing a desire to “change the idol industry,” which critics now claim she has failed to do, and even contributed to worsening.
The original clip, from an interview conducted in 2022, resurfaced recently and quickly gained traction on social media platforms like Twitter. Netizens are now scrutinizing Yunjin’s words in light of perceived shortcomings within the K-pop industry and, specifically, criticisms leveled against LE SSERAFIM themselves.
Yunjin, born Huh Yunjin on October 8, 2001, in South Korea before relocating to the United States as an infant, initially pursued a career in the entertainment industry through the survival show Produce 48 in 2018, representing Pledis Entertainment. While she didn’t make the final lineup, she continued to train and eventually debuted with LE SSERAFIM in 2022, formed by Source Music (now under HYBE Corporation).
The current wave of criticism isn’t simply about a perceived lack of progress in industry reform. Many commenters are directly linking LE SSERAFIM’s own experiences – particularly the vocal performance controversy at the Coachella festival – to Yunjin’s earlier statements. The argument being made is that, rather than contributing to positive change, the group has, in some ways, perpetuated existing issues within the industry.
Social media is filled with posts accusing Yunjin of hypocrisy, with some users pointing to alleged cosmetic procedures and questioning her association with figures like Bang Si-hyuk, the founder of HYBE, whom they accuse of contributing to the problems she initially sought to address. The tone of many comments is intensely personal, extending beyond critiques of her artistic function to attacks on her appearance and personal life.
One Twitter user wrote, “It’s so funny when you feel about how she literally didn’t change a single thing,” accompanied by a link to the original interview. Another post stated, “yunjin saying this while her role model, bang sihyuk is actively destroying it,” alongside a picture of the HYBE founder.
Other users have focused on the perceived decline in vocal standards within the industry, claiming LE SSERAFIM’s performance contributed to this trend. More vitriolic posts accuse Yunjin of undergoing “278294 surgeries and skin bleaching and releasing shitty musics.”
However, not all responses have been negative. Some fans have defended Yunjin, arguing that her intentions were genuine and that systemic change within the K-pop industry is a monumental task that cannot be accomplished by a single individual. They also point out that many other idols have expressed similar desires for reform, yet Yunjin is the only one facing such intense scrutiny.
One Twitter user commented, “I will never get why she got hate for this when every other idol says something like this.” Another added, “every other idol has said a variation of this and it takes more than one person to change an entire industry you guys are miserable.”
The situation highlights the intense pressures faced by K-pop idols and the often-unforgiving nature of online fandom. Yunjin’s initial comments, while idealistic, appear to have set an impossibly high bar for herself and her group. The resurfacing of the video serves as a reminder of the challenges involved in navigating the complex dynamics of the K-pop industry and the potential consequences of publicly expressing ambitious goals for change.
