Loana Petrucciani: Big Brother Star Found Dead at 48

Loana Petrucciani: Big Brother Star Found Dead at 48

March 26, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Loana Petrucciani, a reality television personality who rose to fame on the French edition of Massive Brother, has died at the age of 48. Her death was confirmed on March 25, 2026, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.

Petrucciani first captured the public’s attention in 2001 as a contestant on Loft Story France 1, a program that mirrored the format of Big Brother, confining participants to a house under constant camera surveillance. She won the inaugural season, becoming an instant celebrity in France. Even though, she was perhaps most widely known for an intimate encounter with fellow contestant Jean-Edouard Lipa, which occurred in the show’s swimming pool and sparked considerable controversy and public discussion.

News of her death prompted an outpouring of tributes from within the French television industry. M6, the network that aired Loft Story, described her as “an iconic figure” who “will forever remain a personality who profoundly marked an entire generation of viewers,” praising her “spontaneity, sensitivity, and authenticity.”

Alexia Laroche-Joubert, CEO of Banijay France, the production company behind Loft Story, expressed deep emotion upon learning of Petrucciani’s passing. “Our paths crossed 25 years ago, and I am honoured to have shared so many memories with her,” Laroche-Joubert stated. “I witnessed her successes and her struggles… My thoughts are, of course, with her mother, Violette, her daughter, her brother, and the other housemates who were part of this adventure.”

Benjamin Castaldi, a presenter on Loft Story, reflected on Petrucciani’s impact, stating, “We find some faces we never forget. And hers, Loana’s, is part of our collective history.” He described the show as a “revolution” that changed television, and emphasized that Petrucciani was not simply a character, but “a real woman… with its cracks, its sweetness, its fragility.” Castaldi also acknowledged a collective responsibility for the pressures she faced, noting that the public often observed her struggles without offering support.

Following her win on Loft Story, Petrucciani enjoyed a period of significant public attention, appearing on magazine covers, including a photoshoot for Elle by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, and publishing a deeply personal memoir. In her memoir, she openly discussed both the highs and lows of her newfound fame, as well as previous struggles with her mental health, including suicide attempts.

She recounted feeling insecure before entering the Loft Story house, recalling a casting director questioning her appearance and asking her to “flirt with the camera,” something she found difficult. She described her initial reluctance to participate fully, but ultimately embraced the experience, revealing a different side of her personality to the public.

In the early 2010s, Petrucciani experienced a severe health crisis, attempting to take her own life and falling into a coma. Her family later revealed that this was not an isolated incident, and that she had made multiple prior attempts to end her life.

The circumstances surrounding her death are currently under investigation. Prosecutor Damien Martinelli stated that she was found dead at her home in Nice and had been deceased for “several days” prior to discovery. The investigation aims to determine the cause of death.

Petrucciani’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the intense pressures and challenges faced by individuals who find themselves thrust into the spotlight, and the importance of mental health support. Her legacy remains complex, marked by both the initial fame and controversy of Loft Story and the subsequent, incredibly public, struggles she endured.
